To prevent possible injury, do not use the starter motor to turn the flywheel. Hot engine components can cause burns. Allow additional time for the engine to cool before measuring valve clearance. |
Note: The following warning should be located on the valve covers of the engine.
Electrical shock hazard. Unit injector system 90-120 volts. |
Perform the first valve lash adjustment for new engines and for rebuilt engines at the first oil change. The initial wear of the valve train components and the initial seating of the valve train components causes this valve lash adjustment to be required.
Subsequent checks of the valve lash and adjustments of the valve lash are scheduled for every 4000 service hours.
Valve Bridge
Check the valve bridge before you set the valve lash. Be sure that the valve bridge is equally seated on both the valve stems. If necessary, adjust the valve bridge before you set the valve lash.
NOTICE |
---|
Operation of Caterpillar Engines with improper engine valve lash adjustments will reduce the engine efficiency. This reduced efficiency could result in excessive fuel usage and/or shortened engine component life. Measure the engine valve lash with the engine stopped. To obtain an accurate measurement, allow at least 20 minutes for the valves to cool to engine cylinder head and block temperature. |

If the valve clearance is within 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) of the given nominal clearance, no adjustment is required. If the clearance is not within the given limits, set the clearance to the amount that is specified in the chart.

Intake     | 0.5 mm (0.02 inch)     |
Exhaust     | 1.00 mm (0.04 inch)     |
