SUBJECT: SCHEDULED OIL SAMPLING (SOS) RESULTS ON BACKHOE LOADERS

PROBLEM:

Oil analysis of the rear axle of the backhoe loader is very difficult to interpret. The brake discs for the backhoe loader are located within the differential housing and use the same differential oil for cooling and lubricating the brake. Frequent brake applications can cause the iron and copper levels to increase dramatically and give a false indication that a problem may exist. High (SOS) results is more an indicator of frequency of brake application, rather than problems within the differential. Based on (high) results, many dealers have disassembled the axle only to find normal brake wear and nothing else wrong.

SOLUTION:

Do not sample and test oil samples from the rear axle of the backhoe loader. If samples are taken, make an interpretation of the oil sample results using a trend line developed for each operator. A change in operators or machine application can alter the oil analysis trend.
