Description of Change: An improved steering charge pump shaft is now available. The improved shaft has a smoother surface finish. The former shaft could cause premature wear to the charge pump bushings, especially in cold weather operation. The improved shaft increases service life and improves charge pump reliability.
Adaptable To: The improved 172-6985 Shaft was effective with Challenger 65E (6GS435), Challenger 75E (6HS420), Challenger 85E (6JS439), and Challenger 95E (6KS561). The new shaft replaces the 109-5165 Shaft, and is retrofittable to Challenger 65C (2ZJ1789-Up), Challenger 70C (2YL1300-Up), Challenger 75C (4KK2037-Up), Challenger 85C (9TK1554-Up), and all "D" and "E" Series Tillage Tractors.
NOTE: The 109-5165 Shaft will eventually be changed to also include this improvement. At that time, the 172-6985 Shaft will be serviced by the 109-5165 Shaft. Challenger applications should use the 172-6985 Shaft until such time as it is serviced by the 109-5165 Shaft.
If a charge pump failure is encountered, the pump should be disassembled and parts (A), (B), and (C) should be checked for any sign of wear. See the illustration below. Bushing (A) and Shaft (B) are relatively easy to replace if evidence of wear is seen. The inner 5E-8743 Bushing (C) may be inspected for wear by visually checking the bushing surface for a dull brass finish. If a silver color or grooving is noted, then this bushing must be replaced, and will require pump head removal. This is very important, as failure to replace a worn 5E-8743 Bushing will likely cause a repeat failure.
