Description of Change: It is now recommended to service the magnetic transmission screen every 500 hours, instead of every 1000 hours. The 500 hour transmission screen service procedure is identical to the former 1000 hour screen service procedure and should be completed with the 500 hour transmission charge and lubrication filters procedure. Refer to applicable Operation & Maintenance Manual.
Adaptable To: Effective with 776D (5ER), 784B (5RK) Tractors; 771D (6JR), 775D (6KR) Quarry Trucks; 769D (5TR), 773D (7ER), 777D (3PR), 777D (2YW), 785B (6HK), 785C (5AZ), 789B (7EK) and 793C (4AR) Off-Highway Trucks. Adaptable to earlier models.
Magnetic Transmission Screen 500 Hour Service Procedure
1. At transmission, remove cover, wave washer, screen, magnet and tube assembly. Inspect screen and magnets for large particles of debris. An excessive amount of debris may be an indication of possible failure. If large particles are found, determine the source and resolve problem before returning machine to service.
NOTICE |
---|
NOTICE Do not drop or rap magnets against hard objects. Damage to the magnet could occur.
|
2. Remove magnet from tube assembly.
3. Wash the magnet, screen and tube assembly in clean, non-flammable solvent. Clean the magnets with a cloth, stiff brush or pressure air.
4. Install clean magnet, tube assembly, screen and wave washer.
5. Inspect housing seal. Replace if damaged.
6. Install cover.
NOTE: Transmission oil change is Not necessary at the 500 hour service interval unless large debris or S.O.S. sample indicates oil contamination.
Transmission Charge and Lubrication Filters
1. Remove transmission charge and lubrication filter drain plugs. Drain oil into suitable container. Clean and re-install the drain plugs.
NOTE: Removing the drain plugs from the bottom of the filter housings may not drain the oil from the filters. When removing the housings and elements, be careful of hot oil.
2. Remove the housings and filter elements. Inspect housing for metal and other debris. Use a 4C-5084 Filter Cutter to cut the filter element open. Spread pleats apart and inspect the element for metal and other debris. An excessive amount of debris may be an indication of possible failure. If large particles are found, determine the source and resolve problem before returning machine to service. Discard the used filter elements into a suitable container.
3. Clean the charge and lubrication filter housings in clean, non-flammable solvent.
4. Inspect the seals in the filter bases. Replace if damaged.
5. Install new Caterpillar recommended filter elements in housings. Install housings.
6. Start engine and operate at low idle. Check for leaks and make any necessary repairs.
7. Observe oil level when the oil is warm, parking brake ON and transmission in NEUTRAL.
8. Maintain oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.
9. Add oil if necessary.
