Usage:

D350E (9LR),
D400E (2YR) Articulated Trucks

Reference: Service Manual Module, SENR8692; Disassembly and Assembly, D350E & D400E Articulated Truck Power Train; Page 13; "Engine, Retarder & Torque Convertor". This module is part of Disassembly and Assembly Manual SENR8690.

The D&A manual only details the method of removing the torque converter and retarder in conjunction with engine removal. It is possible to save time and effort by removing the torque converter and retarder without removing the engine.

The following procedure can be used to remove the torque converter and retarder assembly without removing the engine.

1. Raise the front chassis to its upper most limits by utilizing the suspension charging valve as depicted in the above referenced manual.

2. Block the main frame to keep tractor unit at full height.

3. Drain the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic tank.

4. Remove all the external parts of the torque converter, such as the lockup valve, transmission pump, and brackets.

5. Remove the mounting bolts on the front of the retarder, and use the lifting points in the top of the torque converter mounted retarder to back it away from the flywheel housing.

6. Remove 7U-3696 Plate (depicted with an arrow in Illustration 1) to allow the unit to be lowered.

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the filler cap on the hydraulic oil tank only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Be sure all the hydraulic pressure is released before any fittings, hoses or components are loosened, tightened, removed or adjusted.

-------WARNING!-------

NOTICE

Fluid Spillage Containment: Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
