SOS Allowable Soot Level Changed{1318}

Usage:

All Caterpillar Machines Powered by 3114 and 3116 Engines

The maximum allowable soot level for engine oil in 3114 and 3116 engines has been changed to 145%, using Caterpillar Scheduled Oil Sampling (S0S) Infrared testing procedures. The recommended oil and filter change interval is 250 hours, maximum. When operating at 1830 m (6000 ft) or higher, the engine oil and filter change interval should be shortened to 200 hours, or less, using SOS results to determine an acceptable interval. This new higher 145% soot limit is based on laboratory and field testing which indicate that engine wear is normal with soot levels up to 145%. In applications where SOS soot levels exceed 145%, engine oil and filter change intervals should be shortened. An SOS analysis can determine if a shorter change interval is needed for a particular application.

NOTE: Do not use the new higher 145% soot limit to extend engine oil and filter change intervals beyond the recommended 250 hour change interval. The percent allowable soot is only one of several SOS values. Be sure to evaluate ALL the SOS values.

3114 And 3116 Engine Oil Specifications

* Caterpillar recommends multigrade Cat Diesel Engine Oil DEO (CF-4). * If Cat Diesel Engine Oil DEO (CF-4) cannot be used, commercially available multigrade API Specification CF-4 oil is recommended. * If multigrade API Specification CF-4 oil is not available, use multigrade API Specification CE, CE/SG, MIL-L-2104E, or CCMC D4 in Europe. * If the above oils are not available, use Cat DEO (CD) which is single grade, or use commercially available multigrade API Specification CD oil. * Other single grade oils are not recommended.

NOTE: Caterpillar recommends multigrade API Specification CF-4 oil for engines in ALL Caterpillar machines.
