Normal wear can cause lateral movement in the 7U-3971 and 7U-4572 Front Suspension Frame Groups. The wear can sometimes be heard as a "knocking" noise during steering directional changes.
Use the method that follows, along with the reference material, to eliminate the knocking noise caused by front suspension frame group movement.
1. Raise the front of the machine by the mainframe until the tires are off the ground. Place suitable supports under the mainframe.
2. Place a dial indicator on the mainframe so that movement of the front suspension frame group can be measured.
3. Use a suitable tool, such as a large pry bar, to move the front suspension frame from side to side. Record the total movement.
4. Install 4U-8769 [1.0 mm (.04 in)] and 4U-8849 [3.0 mm (.12 in)] Shims equally on either side of the machine until the lateral movement is ± 1.0 mm (± .04 in). See the illustration.
NOTE: Make sure the transmission output and axle input yokes alignment is kept within the specified ± 1.0 mm (± .04 in).
