Usage:
Challenger 65 Tractors
Description of Change: A new flywheel cover is used to prevent dust in the starter area. Under extremely dusty conditions, the former flywheel cover allowed dust to enter the flywheel housing through a gap between the input shaft and the flywheel cover. The accumulated dust in the flywheel and starter areas can cause the starter to fail. If the starter just clicks and all the other electrical components are good, the problem may be dust build-up in the starter drive.
The former cover had a large gap between the input shaft and the cover where dust could easily enter. The new cover has a smaller gap (A) around the coupling assembly. This smaller gap will help reduce starter failures by keeping dust out of the flywheel cover.
Adaptable To: The new 4E4382 Flywheel Cover (1) replaces the former 3W5726 Flywheel Cover which is canceled. If a former cover is ordered, you will receive a new cover. The new cover is effective with 7YC1670 and is adaptable to all earlier Challenger 65 Tractors.
Sealing Techniques
The following procedure applies to both the former and new covers.
To ensure that the flywheel is sealed correctly, RTV sealant must be used to seal all areas that may allow dust to enter the cover. Before applying RTV sealant, clean all surfaces with 8T9011 or 4C4079 Solvent.
Recommended Sealants:
3W5064 Input Shaft Group. Apply sealant at the arrows.
View B-B. Apply sealant at the arrows.
Apply sealant to all joint gaps along the base of the engine block and 3W2757 Plate (2). Also apply the sealant in a continuous bead along the flange centerline and on a radius around the bolt holes on cover (1) that seats against the rear face of the block and plate (2).
It is recommended to let the sealant cure overnight before machine use.
