Pistons (Later)

Usage:

Install Pistons

1. Put clean engine oil on the crankshaft journals, in the cylinder liners, on the piston rings, and on the connecting rod bearings.

2. Install tool (A) around piston rings and piston. Install piston (1) and connecting rod in its cylinder liner. Make sure the "V" marks on the piston is in alignment with the "V" mark on the (cylinder block) or plate.

3. Lower the connecting rod carefully over the crankshaft journal.

4. Put clean engine oil on the threads of the connecting rod bolts.

NOTICE

Make sure the numbers on the connecting rods and caps are the same and that they are on the same side.

5. Install the nuts on the connecting rod bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 75 ± 5 lb. ft. (100 ± 7 N·m). Put a mark on the nuts and caps. Tighten the nuts an extra 60° ± 5° from the mark.

6. Install rear cover (2). Install the bolts (3) that hold it in position.

end by:

a) install oil pump

b) install cylinder head assembly

NOTICE

The new 7N5037 Piston Group is the replacement for the 6N6642 Piston Group that was formerly used in current 6.25 in. bore 6 cylinder engines. The new piston group can also be used as a replacement for the 3S5502 Piston Assembly that was used in earlier 6.25 in. bore, 6 cylinder engines.

The position of the top ring on the new piston is .040 in. (1.02 mm) higher (nearer the top of the piston body) than it was on the former piston body. Do not install the new piston into a cylinder liner that has been used with either the 6N6642 Piston Group or the 3S5502 Piston Assembly unless the wear ridge, that is toward the top of the cylinder liner, is removed according to the procedure given in Special Instruction Form SEHS7220. If the wear ridge is not removed, the result will be immediate damage to the top ring or the piston, at the time of engine startup.
