Usage:
NOTE: The final drive carrier and hub assembly can be disassembled and assembled without removing the front axle from the machine. It is shown removed only for better illustration.
1. Put front axle (1) in position on tooling (A) if removed. Remove the oil from the final drives.
2. Remove two screws (2). Use recessed holes (4) in the hub to remove planetary carrier (3).
3. Remove retainer rings (5) from each of the planetary gears.
4. Remove thrust washer (6).
5. Remove planetary gears (7).
6. Remove retainer ring (8). Remove bearing assembly (9) from the planetary gear.
7. Remove two bolts (10) and lock (11). Remove spanner nut (12) and ring gear (13).
8. Install tooling (B) on the hub as shown.
9. Put hub (14) and the bearings from the shaft.
10. Remove nylon ring (15), lip seal (16), inner bearing (17) and races (18) from the hub.
Assemble Final Drive Carrier And Hub Assembly (Front Axle)
1. Lower the temperature of bearing races (1), and install them in the hub.
2. Install inner bearing (3) in the hub. Use tool (A) and a press to install lip seal (2) in the hub. Install the seal with the lip toward the bearing. The outer surface of seal (2) should be lubricated with a solution of 50% water and 50% alcohol.
3. Install nylon ring (4). The flexible lip of the nylon ring should be in the "UP" position.
4. Heat inner bearing (3) as shown in Illustration C8848P1. Put clean lubricant on the wear ring that is on the steering knuckle and then slide the hub assembly on the spindle.
5. Heat outer bearing (5), and install it in the hub assembly.
6. Install ring gear (6) and spanner nut (7). Tighten the nut until the rolling torque is 13 to 17 N·m (117 to 153 lb in) and lock (9) can be installed. Install bolts (8). Tighten these bolts to a torque of 53 N·m (39 lb ft).
7. Install bearing assembly (11) in the planetary gear. Install retainer rings (10).
8. Heat planetary gear assemblies (12) to a temperature of 135°C (275°F), then install them in the housing. Install retainer rings (13).
9. Determine the end play of the swivel joint.
10. With tooling (B), measure the distance from the housing face to the thrust washer bore. Make a record of this dimension. This is Dimension (X).
NOTE: Do not include the thickness of the straight edge with this dimension.
11. Push the swivel joint in. With tool (B), measure the distance from the end of the swivel joint to the mating face of the hub. The dimension is Dimension (Z).
To find the required shim thickness, subtract dimension (Z) from dimension (X) then subtract the desired end play of 0.46 mm (.018 in).
12. Install thrust washer (14) of the correct thickness in the planetary carrier.
13. Put planetary carrier (16) in position on the hub with two screws (15). Tighten the screws to a torque of 49 N·m (36 lb ft).
14. Fill the final drives with oil to the correct capacity. See the Operation And Maintenance Manual. Tighten the drain plug to a torque of 120 N·m (90 lb ft).
