SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR REFLASHING ENGINE SOFTWARE

MODELS INVOLVED - CERTAIN 3054E, AND 3056E INDUSTRIAL ENGINES

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

A potential fault within the Engine Control Module (ECM), which manages many of the key operating functions of engine, may occur on the above machine. The occurrence of this fault could result in loss of engine speed control (throttle response) and the inability to switch the engine off via the normal key switch shut down process and may possibly cause serious injury or death. New software needs to be installed in the engine ECM. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated May 30, 2005 when scheduling this service.

1. Log onto SIS web
2. Select from Additional Service Information "Engine Technical Marketing Information ? TMI Web" as shown in Fig 1

3. After selecting "Engine Technical Marketing Information ? TMI Web" you will see the following screen see Fig 2
4. Enter your full machine number into the "Reference Number" field.

5. Select from field shown in Figure 3 second field "Serial Number" as shown
6. Select "Retrieve Data"

7. You should have the following screen shown in Figure 4
8. From this screen select Flash File as shown in figure 4

Flash file Programming Electronic Control Module

1. Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
2. Select "WinFlash" from the "Utilities" menu on Cat ET.


"WinFlash" will try to detect an ECM.

3. When an ECM has been detected, the "ECM Selector" window will appear. Select the appropriate ECM that needs to be flashed and press "OK".


The "Flash File Selection" window will appear.

4. When the window "Flash File Selection" appears locate flash files, which you previously downloaded from TMI.


A list of flash files will appear.

5. Select the correct file from the list of flash files. Read the "File Info" and the "Description" in order to verify that the correct file is selected. Select "OK".
6. Select the "Begin Flash" button in order to program the personality module.


When the flash is completed, this message will appear: "Flash Completed Successfully".

7. Key off the ignition for 30 seconds to reset all parameters on the ECM
8. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
