PROBLEM
Certain 3412E Engine and Marine Power Display (MPD) software combinations do not communicate properly. Events, such as "high coolant temperature" and "low oil pressure", may not be displayed on the MPD. Severe engine damage and/ or loss of power could result if the operator is not aware of the situation. The current engine software does not communicate all required events with the Marine Power Display (MPD). In addition software changes have been made in order to improve engine monitoring.AFFECTED PRODUCT

PRIORITY - INSTALLATION OF ENHANCED SOFTWARE
MODELS INVOLVED - 3412E MARINE ENGINES WITH MARINE POWER DISPLAY (MPD)
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
Certain engine and Marine Power Display (MPD) software combinations do not communicate properly. Events, such as "high coolant temperature" and "low oil pressure", may not be displayed on the MPD. Severe engine damage and/or loss of power could result if the operator is not aware of the situation. 3412E powered vessels that are equipped with the Caterpillar Marine Power Display (MPD) require software enhancements. If your vessel does not have the MPD option please disregard this letter.
If your vessel is equipped with the MPD contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer to their Service Letter dated July 25, 2002 when scheduling this service. You will not be charged for the service performed.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.

Rework Procedure
- Using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), view the ECM Summary in order to determine the engine software part number. See illustration 1.
- Record the current engine power rating information. The rating information is located in the system configuration screen. Refer to illustration 3.
- Due to multiple vessel and engine configurations, action to resolve this program will differ between customers. Review the following sections carefully and ensure a thorough understanding prior to completion of step 4.
Illustration 1
Access the Marine Power Display (MPD) "System
Information" screen. Refer to illustration 2. To access this screen, depress
one of the control buttons on the right side of the Marine Power Display
(MPD).

Illustration 3
In order to develop a consistent order of the
Rating Numbers across product families, the new software may change the
power rating that is associated with a particular Rating Number. After
flashing new software it may be required to reselect the desired power
rating.
- If the vessel that is being serviced is equipped with the Caterpillar Marine Power Display (MPD) and DOES NOT contain 1986877 injectors, install software "Group A".
- If the vessel that is being serviced is equipped with the Caterpillar Marine Power Display (MPD) and DOES NOT contain 1590835 (0R9420) injectors, install software "Group B".
- Engines with serial numbers less than 9PW00402 may not contain the 1590835 injectors. However, some engines may have had the 1590835 (0R9420) injectors installed in the field (after production). When servicing these engines access SIMS in order to verify that the injectors were not installed.
- If the vessel that is being serviced is equipped with the Caterpillar Marine Power Display (MPD) and 1986877 injectors, install software "Group C".
- Engines with serial numbers greater than 9KS01416 should indicate the 1986877 injector on the engine data tag. Some engines may have had the 1986877 injectors installed in the field (after production). When servicing these engines, verify the installation of the injectors in SIMS.
- If the vessel that is being serviced is equipped with the Caterpillar Marine Power Display (MPD) and 1590835 (0R9420) injectors, install software "Group D".
- Engines with serial numbers greater than 9PW00402 should indicate the 1590835 injector on the engine data tag. Some engines may have had the 1590835 (0R9420) injectors installed in the field (after production). When servicing these engines, verify the installation of the injectors in SIMS.
- If the vessel that is being serviced is equipped with the Caterpillar Marine Power Display (MPD) DUAL ECM, and 1590835 (0R9420) injectors, install software "Group E".
- If one of the following Flash File part numbers were installed, the Fuel Ratio Control (FRC) map selection (see illustration 4.) must be verified/changed:
- If one of the listed part numbers was installed, access the FRC map selection.
- If the current map selected is one (1), then change the map to read three (3).
- If the current map selected is two (2), then DO NOT change the map selection.
- If the current map selected is three (3), then change the map to read one (1).
- If one of the following Flash File part numbers were installed, the power rating selection must be verified/changed:
- The Marine Power Display (MPD) has three configuration pins that are located on the Marine Power Display?s twelve-pin connector. On previous MPD flash file releases (213-1907 MPD Flash File or earlier), configuration pin 1 and configuration pin 2 were connected to configuration pin 3. These connections were responsible for enabling the starboard display, the port display, and the center display.
- If ET does not detect the MPD, switch data links (See Illustration 6).

Illustration 5 - Connections for the Marine Power Display
When the 217-8181 MPD Flash File (or later flash file) is installed in the MPD, the MPD/engine relationship is handled with Caterpillar ET (version 2002A or later). With Cat ET handling the MPD/engine relationship, the configuration pins are now used to disable the Marine Classification Society (MCS) protection mode. To disable the MCS protection mode, ground configuration pin 1 and/or configuration pin 2 to configuration pin 3.
With the release of the 217-8181 MPD Flash File, the three configuration pins are labeled as shown in Table 1.

In order to configure the MPD/engine relationship,
complete the following steps:
1. Ensure that ET connects to J1939 data link.
Illustration 6 - Switch Data Link
b. If ET is connected through the ATA data link, you will need to "switch data link" twice. ET first switches from ATA to CDL. Next, ET switches from CDL to J1939.
Select the "Configuration Tool".

In the "configuration tool", select the correct
display location and the engine location.
