Modification To Swivel Group Permits Use Of Lip-Type Seal{5060}

Usage:

225 Excavators ( 51U2832-Up ) And 227 Loggers Equipped With 9J3567 Swivel Group

The 9J3567 Swivel Group uses a flat 8J388 Seal between the housing and the washer and rotor. In some applications this seal has not kept out dirt and debris. The result of this can be damage to the rotor.

To decrease the possibility of damage, a modification can be made to the 9J3563 Housing so that a 3J4458 Lip-Type Seal can be used. This lip-type seal will give better service. It will also be necessary to make a larger washer to use as a replacement for the existing 8J389 Washer.

To use a 3J4458 Lip-Type Seal it will be necessary to machine the 9J3563 Housing as shown in Illustration 1. This seal must be installed in the housing with the lip towards the top. The new washer can be made from carburizing grade steel. This new washer must be carburized to a depth of 0.7 to 1.1 mm (.03 to .04"). It must also be hardened to a minimum hardness number of 55 on the Rockwell C-Scale. The finished dimensions for this washer are shown in Illustration 2. This washer must be flat within 0.05 mm (.002") when finished.
