Usage:
Caterpillar Track-Type Tractors And Pipelayers
Safe operation on steep slopes may require special machine maintenance as well as excellent operator skill and proper equipment for the specific application.
Incorrect drive train oil level can cause the transmission pump on track-type tractors and pipelayers to cavitate when operating on steep slopes. This can result in loss of pressure to operate steering clutches, to provide boost for brakes and to keep power shift transmissions engaged. Machines with power shift transmissions can free-wheel if pump pressure is lost. Boosted brakes can be applied mechanically (without boost) but the pedal effort required to control the machine will be greatly increased.
Machine design does not permit operation on fore-aft slopes greater than 45° (100% grade) due to excessive pump cavitation. The D3 through D6, D8L, D9L, D10 Tractors and 561 and 591 Pipelayers will operate up to 45° (100% grade) with the drive train oil level at the full mark. For acceptable operation on slopes between 25° (47% grade) and 45° (100% grade), the transmission, bevel gear and steering clutch compartment must be at the full mark for all models except the following which require overfill.
- D7E, D7F, D7G, 571, 571F, 571G, 572E, 572F, 572G - 23 liters (6 gallon) overfill
- D8H, D8K, 583H, 583K - 11 liters (3 gallon) overfill
- D9E, D9G, D9H, 594, 594H - 13 liters (3-1/2 gallon) overfill
- D8H, D8K, 583H, 583K - 11 liters (3 gallon) overfill
Extended operation with higher oil level than required for the operating terrain may result in excessive heat buildup in the drive train system.
Do not stop the engine on any slope without securely parking the machine with the parking brake firmly applied and implements lowered to the ground.
