Usage:
D8K Tractors ( 77V14539-Up, 76V777-Up, 66V ) And 583K Pipelayers ( 78V955-Up)
Description of Change: Two new, steel steam vent tube assemblies are used instead of the copper tube assemblies in the turbocharger housing water lines group for D8K Tractors and 583K Pipelayers with the above Serial Numbers.
The turbocharger housing water lines group permits a flow of engine coolant to and from the water-cooled turbocharger. See the May 26, 1980 SERVICE MAGAZINE article, "New Turbocharger Uses Engine Coolant To Keep Turbocharger Bearings And Seals Cooler."
Copper steam vent tube assemblies were first used in the turbocharger housing water lines group, but vibration some times caused them to have a short service life.
The steel steam vent tube assemblies are stronger and shorter than the copper tube assemblies. Vibration will have less effect on the steel tube assemblies which will give them longer service life in comparison to the copper tube assemblies.
Adaptable As: The new parts are a direct replacement for the former parts which are canceled. The parts also are adaptable to D8K Tractors with Serial Numbers 77V14411-77V14538 in which the copper steam vent tube assemblies were used.
The Illustration shows the location of the new parts.
NOTE: The long end of the 2P1276 Bulkhead Union must be installed through the bulkhead, toward the front of the engine. The 5B3254 Locknut must be installed on the long end of the union, in front of the bulkhead as shown in the Illustration.
Location of the new parts, and correct installation of the 2P1276 37° Flared Bulkhead Union and the 5B3254 Locknut.
NOTICE |
---|
For those machines which have had field-fabricated turbocharger steam vent tube assemblies installed, check to make sure there are no loops (circles), twists or low places that can become filled with coolant. Coolant in a low place in the tube can prevent movement of steam away from the turbocharger. The result is an overheated turbocharger which can cause turbocharger bearing and seal failures.
