Loader Frame and Rear Frame - Separate

Usage:

Separation Procedure

Start By:

a. Install the steering frame lock pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock Pin - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

b. Release the pressure from the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

c. Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Power Train, "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the separation procedure, the exterior of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

NOTE: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help to prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system.

1. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (1) (if equipped) from the rod end of the steering cylinder.

2. Remove nut (2) from the steering cylinder rod end collet assembly.

3. Remove bolt (3) and the washer from the steering cylinder rod end collet assembly.

4. Use Tooling (A) to remove the upper collet. Tighten the forcing bolts evenly to remove the collet.

5. Use Tooling (A) to remove the lower collet.

6. Remove the pin and the shims (if equipped) from the rod end of the steering cylinder. Put identification marks on the shims for correct installation.

7. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 for the rod end of the steering cylinder on the other side of the machine.

8. Disconnect hose assembly (4) from the manifold in the rear frame.

9. Disconnect hose assembly (5) from the hydraulic tank.

10. Remove two harness clips (6).

11. Disconnect the wiring harnesses from electrical connectors (7) and (8).

12. Disconnect four hose assemblies (9) from the bulkhead on the rear frame.

13. Disconnect four hose assemblies (10).

14. Disconnect axle oil cooling hose assemblies (11) and (12) (if equipped) from the manifold in the front frame.

15. Position suitable wood blocks under the rear of the machine, as shown.

16. Position suitable wood blocks under both sides of the rear frame, as shown.

17. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to the front loader frame, as shown.

18. Place the forks of a suitable lift truck under the bucket, as shown.

19. Use Tooling (B), suitable lifting chains and a sling to secure the bucket to the mast of the lift truck, as shown.

20. Remove eight bolts (13), four bolts (14), the washers, plate (15) and the shims from the lower hitch pin and the front loader frame.

21. Put Tooling (C) in position under the loader frames, as shown. Use Tooling (C) to remove lower hitch pin (16).

22. Use a hammer and a punch to remove spacer (17) from the lower hitch assembly.

23. Remove steering frame lock pin (18). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock Pin - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.

24. Remove four bolts (19) and the washers that hold the upper hitch pin to the rear frame.

25. Put Tooling (C) in position on a wood block, as shown. Use Tooling (C) and a suitable extension bar to remove upper hitch pin (20).

26. Connect Tooling (D) to parking brake hose assembly (21) from the front loader frame, as shown. Operate the hydraulic pump from Tooling (D) to a pressure of 3445 kPa (500 psi). This will disengage the parking brake in the front axle group.

27. Use the lift truck and the hoist to carefully separate the front frame from the rear frame.

28. Position wood blocks under the front loader frame, as shown.

29. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (25) (if equipped) from the upper hitch assembly.

30. Mark the radial position of upper cap (22) and lower cap (23) for installation purposes. Remove six bolts (24), the washers, upper cap (22) and lower cap (23) from the upper hitch assembly.

31. Remove shims (26) from the upper hitch assembly.

32. Remove lip seals (27) from caps (22) and (23).

Typical Example

33. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (E), as shown. Use Tooling (E) to remove the bearing cups and the bearing cones from the upper hitch.

Typical Example

34. Fasten a hoist and suitable lifting slings to Tooling (F), as shown. Use Tooling (F) to remove bearing sleeves (28) and (29) from the rear frame.

35. Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (30) from the lower hitch assembly.

36. Remove spacer (31) from the lower hitch assembly.

37. Mark the radial position of upper cap (32) and lower cap (33) for installation purposes. Remove ten bolts (34), the washers, upper cap (32) and lower cap (33) from the lower hitch assembly.

38. Remove the shim pack from under upper cap (32).

39. Remove lip seals (35) from caps (32) and (33).

Typical Example

40. Use Tooling (G) to remove the bearing cups and the bearing cones from the lower hitch.
