The new 146-2588 Spark Plug, identified in the Reference Article, provides several benefits as follows:
1. The new 146-2588 Spark Plug has a 1000 ohm wire wound resistor. This allows you to check the resistance of the plug with a standard multimeter. The SAC9 type resistor spark plug (124-7380 and 149-9931) can not be resistance tested with the standard multimeter, but requires a special resistance tester.
2. The new 146-2588 Spark Plug wire wound resistor is installed at the upper end of the plug, just under the threaded top connector stud. This stud has a longer stem below the threads to keep the anaerobic sealer from wicking down and contaminating the electrical interface between the stud end and the resistor. Also, with the resistor higher, it runs cooler and lasts longer.
3. The glass seal that fastens the center electrode to the ceramic insulator and maintains an air tight seal is capable of withstanding higher operating temperatures. This will help keep the center electrode from breaking free and slipping up into the plug in high temperature applications.
4. The combustion tip of the plug is masked during plating and will no longer have any metal salts that can burn free and form whiskers to short the center electrode to the ground strap in high combustion temperature applications. These shorts usually result in multiple shut downs which can require cleaning the plug tip to remove the whiskers.
5. This new 146-2588 Spark Plug can be used in any gas engine that requires an 18 mm plug. The use of this spark plug will allow you to standardize on only one 18 mm spark plug. You will not have to think about "blue nose", "black nose", "no color nose", or whatever transformers or application.
NOTE: Always be sure to use a new 9Y-6792 Gasket any time a spark plug is installed. This will help get proper spark plug sealing and insure proper spark plug cooling.
