Usage:
3116 (4KG, 1SK) Marine Engines
A new turbocharger group and air cleaner mounting group replace all earlier turbocharger groups and air cleaner mounting groups on these engines. The new turbocharger group and air cleaner mounting group will provide increased durability and reliability.
The new air cleaner mounting group includes the new 144-8883 Adapter. This adapter is designed for the four inch diameter turbocharger compressor inlet on 130-5921, 127-7077, and 143-1209 Turbocharger Groups (0R-7076, 0R-7122, and 0R-7212 Remanufactured Turbocharger Groups). The new adapter has NO straps inside the air cleaner. Also, the new adapter has a longer four inch diameter inlet tube that is flared on the inlet side to provide smoother air flow into the turbocharger compressor. The new air cleaner mounting group is effective with 3116 (4KG6467) Marine Engine.
The new 143-1209 Turbocharger Group (0R-7212 Remanufactured Turbocharger Group) includes a more robust bearing system and compressor wheel for increased reliability. The new turbocharger group retains the recirculation feature on the compressor housing. The new turbocharger group is effective with 3116 (4KG6320) Marine Engine. The 0R-7138 Remanufactured Cartridge Group [available to service the 143-1209 Turbocharger Group (0R-7212 Remanufactured Turbocharger Group)] will NOT fit into earlier turbocharger groups used on this engine.
If ANY turbocharger group is to be replaced on an engine with a 7E-3711 or 130-5899 Air Cleaner Mounting Adapter Assembly (identified by the four mounting straps extending through the air cleaner element for support), order the components identified in the following chart:
NOTICE |
---|
Repeated turbocharger failures on the same engine are frequently caused by debris left from earlier failures. See Engine News, May 1993, "Service Tips For Effective Repair Of Failed Turbochargers".

If there is a turbocharger compressor wheel failure:
1. Replace the 7W-5040 (foam) or 8N-5006 (paper) Air Cleaner Element (If the engine is equipped with "AirSeps", replace the 4P-7918 Element).
2. Thoroughly clean debris from the aftercooler.
3. Make necessary repairs.
If there is a turbocharger turbine wheel failure:
1. Thoroughly clean debris from the exhaust manifold.
2. Make necessary repairs.
