In order to allow equitable parts availability to all participating dealers, please limit your initial parts order to not exceed 12% of dealership population. This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer. |
ACTION REQUIRED
Before a failure has occurred, inspect the A/C system for signs of the start of a compressor failure. If there are no signs present of a compressor failure, add additional PAG 46 oil and increase the system refrigerant charge by following the attached "Before Failure" rework procedure. After a failure has occurred, replace the parts needed for after failure, add additional PAG 46 oil and increase the system refrigerant charge by following the attached "After Failure" rework procedure. NOTE: Locally procure PAG 46 Compressor Oil. |
SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
0-24 mo |
NOTE: This is a 2.0-hour job | ||||||
NOTE: The 2 hours is to complete a "Before Failure" rework procedure. An additional 3 hours will be allowed to complete an "After Failure" rework procedure. |
PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. |
Before Failure: NOTE: Refer to SENR5664 for proper Refrigerant Recovery, System Evacuate, Oil and Refrigerant Charge NOTE: Lubricate all O-rings with clean mineral oil. Step 1: Recover the refrigerant and compressor oil from the system. Step 2: Remove the 232-1384 Orifice Tube and inspect for signs of compressor failure. Step 3: Look for extensive amounts of metal debris and "grayish" sludge build up on the orifice inlet filter screen as well as shrunken stickers on the compressor face opposite of the pulley. If both metal debris on the orifice tube and the shrunken sticker on compressor have occurred, the compressor has begun to fail and the "After Failure" procedure must be followed. The following 3 images are typical examples of these defects in which a failure has occurred. Please upload pictures of contaminated orifice tube and shrunken sticker in SIMSi for Caterpillar review. |

Step 4: If the orifice tube is satisfactory, continue with the "Before Failure" repair. Step 5: Install a new 232-1384 Orifice Tube. Step 6: Install a new 9X-7381 O-ring on the hose fitting at the evaporator coil connection. Step 7: Pull a vacuum on the A/C system for a minimum of 30 minutes. Step 8: Use Oil Injector (Ref 9U-6494) with A/C system under vacuum to pull 110 ml (3.7 oz) of PAG 46 compressor oil into the A/C System on the High Side. System should have a total volume of 205 - 235 ml (7 - 8 oz) of PAG 46 oil after repair has been completed compared to the original factory oil fill of 150 cc (5.1 oz). Step 9: With the engine off, charge the A/C system on High Side with 2.8 lbs (1.27 Kg) of R-134a Refrigerant. Step 10: Re-label the refrigerant amount tag with 1.27 Kg. The tag is located at the service port location on the A/C lines. Step 11: Check the system for proper cooling and for leaks. NOTE: An electronic leak detector is the preferred CAT method for leak checking the fitting connections. |
After Failure: NOTE: Refer to SENR5664 for proper Refrigerant Recovery, System Evacuate, Oil and Refrigerant Charge NOTE: Lubricate all O-rings with clean mineral oil. Step 1: Recover the refrigerant from the system. Step 2: Replace the 276-9875 Compressor. Step 3: When connecting the A/C hoses to the compressor, use 315-7790 Support Plate and 8T-4195 Bolt. Discard the 8T-4136 Bolt but re-use the 8T-4121 Washer. Tighten to a torque of 35 Nm (25.8 lb-ft). Step 4: Replace the 284-6041 Condenser Coil. Step 5: Replace the 258-4304 Hose Assembly (compressor to condenser). Use a new 9X-7381 O-ring at the hose connection to the condenser. The O-ring in the new compressor can be used. Step 6: Use a new 9X-7378 O-ring and install the 236-6923 Pressure Switch. Step 7: Remove the orifice tube and install a new 232-1384 Orifice Tube. The orifice tube is located in the evaporator inlet tube. Step 8: Replace the 258-4308 Hose Assembly (condenser to evaporator). Use new 9X-7380 and 9X-7381 O-rings on the hose fittings. Step 9: Replace the accumulator with 176-3900 Accumulator (service replacement). Use new 9X-7383 O-rings on the hose fittings. Step 10: Pull a vacuum on the A/C system for a minimum of 30 minutes. Step 11: Use Oil Injector (Ref 9U-6494) with A/C system under vacuum to pull 165 ml (5.7 oz) of PAG 46 compressor oil into the A/C System on the high side. Step 12: With the engine off, charge A/C system on High Side with 2.8 lbs (1.27 Kg) of R-134a Refrigerant. Step 13: Re-label the refrigerant amount tag with 1.27 Kg. The tag is located at the service port location on the A/C lines. Step 14: Check the system for proper cooling and for leaks. NOTE: An electronic leak detector is the preferred CAT method for leak checking the fitting connections. |
