Engine News, November 1993, Page 8, "New Exhaust Valve and Water Cooled Valve Seat Inserts (Heavy Fuel Engines Only)".

In Step 4 of the "Installation Of Water Cooled Valve Seat Inserts" section of the article, the part number 8T2674 Seat Driver is NOT correct. The correct part number is the 4C8769 Seat Driver.

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

This article supersedes the article titled "New Water Cooled Exhaust Valve Insert; Correct Installation Procedure" on Page 11 of the August 1990 issue of Engine News

A new exhaust valve and water cooled valve seat insert are used in 3600 Engines in heavy fuel applications. The 4P3079 Exhaust Valve and 4P3078 Water Cooled Exhaust Valve Seat Insert, when used together, are direct replacements for the former 7C4227 Exhaust Valve and the former 7E9641, 7E6555, or 4W0025 Valve Seat Inserts. The former exhaust valve and valve seat inserts are canceled. The new valve and valve seat insert MUST be used together. DO NOT replace only the former valve or the valve seat insert alone.

The new 4P3079 Exhaust Valve is 5 mm (.2 in) shorter than the former 7C4227 Exhaust Valve. The valve seat on the new 4P3078 Water Cooled Exhaust Valve Seat Insert is recessed 5 mm (.2 in) more than the former water cooled exhaust valve seat inserts. This result in the new exhaust valve being recessed 5 mm (.2 in) into the head when compared to the intake valve. The recessed exhaust valve provides more clearance between the piston and exhaust valve. This additional clearance is required because heavy fuel engines use a high overlap camshaft.

Use the procedure that follows to install the new water cooled valve seat inserts.

Installation Of Water Cooled Valve Seat Inserts

NOTE: The 4P3078 Water Cooled Exhaust Valve Seat Insert should NOT be frozen for installation. These inserts should NOT be hammered into the counterbore in the cylinder head.

1. Make sure the counter bore in the cylinder head for the valve seat insert is clean before installing the new valve seat insert.

2. The valve seat insert should be at room temperature for installation.

3. Before installing the insert, apply 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to the outside diameter of the insert. Then, apply 9S3265 Retaining Compound over the primer.

4. Use an 8T2674 Seat Driver and a hydraulic press to install the insert. Press the insert to the bottom of the exhaust valve seat insert counterbore in the cylinder head casting.
