New Flanges Used And Gaskets Added To Water Cooled Turbocharger Exhaust Connections

Usage:

3508, 3512, 3516 (Except 25Z, 27Z, 29Z) Industrial, Marine, And Generator Set Engines

Reference: Engine News, September 1988, Page 7, "Bellows-Type Exhaust Seals Used On Water Cooled Turbochargers."

Description of Change: The reference article announced the use of bellows-type connections between the water cooled turbochargers and exhaust elbow on the above engines. Now, new half flanges are used at each end of the bellows connections. Also, gaskets are used at each of these four connections. See illustration. No gaskets were previously used at these locations.

The shoulders on the new half flanges extend 2 mm (.1") further into the turbine housings and into the exhaust elbow. This change and the use of gaskets further reduce the possibility of exhaust leaks at the elbow and turbocharger connections.

Location of new flanges and gaskets at the connections between the turbine housings and the exhaust elbow.

Adaptable To: The new flanges and their gaskets can be installed on the above earlier engines with water cooled turbochargers, including those with the original couplings and seals used prior to the bellow-type connections. See Chart A or B in the reference article.

For engines equipped with the bellows connections, only the new parts listed in the chart are needed.
