Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Contamination on Certain C4.4 Engines {108H, 108K, 108T}

Usage:

C4.4 JKT
Engine
C4.4 (S/N: JKT1-UP)

There have been some issues with the aftertreatment system on certain C4.4 engines.

In certain cases, contaminates have been found in the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

The issues lead to DEF system diagnostic trouble codes and event codes which can progress to DEF system inducements and an engine derate condition. Table 1 and table 2 details the codes that may be displayed.

Ensure that DEF fluid conforms to specification ISO 22241 requirements and fluid handling, filling, and storage procedures are strictly followed.

All transfer equipment and storage containers should be used exclusively for DEF and should not be reused for other fluids. For example coolants, fuels, oils, and windshield washer fluid.

If contamination of the DEF system is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, DEF Concentration is Incorrect. Ensure that the correct troubleshooting steps are followed. To test for contamination of the DEF tank, refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality - Test.

If the DEF is contaminated, Caterpillar recommends that the DEF tank is flushed. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank - Flush for the correct procedure. Caterpillar recommends that the following components be replaced:

  • Manifold (DEF heater)

  • DEF injector and mounting

  • Diesel exhaust fluid pump

  • Diesel exhaust fluid lines

Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for the correct procedures.
