Usage:
New 3406B Engines are available for use in industrial, marine and generator set applications. These engines have several improvements over the former 3406 Engines. Some of these improvements are a new fuel system, automatic timing advance and an improved cylinder block.
The new 3406B Engines use the New Scroll Fuel System. This fuel system includes a new fuel transfer pump, fuel injection pump and fuel injection nozzles and nozzle adapters.
The new fuel transfer pump is a piston type pump that is mounted directly on the fuel injection pump. This new piston-type pump will have a longer service life than the former gear-type transfer pump.
The new fuel injection pump operates at pressures up to 103 500 kPa (15,000 psi). This high injection pressure results in a shorter injection duration. More complete combustion is the result.
The fuel injection nozzles have smaller orifices in the tip. These smaller orifices and increased fuel pressure result in a better spray pattern and more complete combustion.
A new automatic timing advance is used on the 3406B Engines. The new timing advance unit can adjust the rate of advance as well as the amount of the advance. The former unit was not adjustable.
An improved cylinder block is also used in the 3406B Engines. These new blocks have a top deck that is thicker.
