Oil Filter Differential Pressure Problem

Usage:

C8.7 CS7
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot abnormal oil filter differential pressure or use this procedure if the following event code is active.

Table 1
Event Codes
J1939 Codes and Description  Conditions which Generate this Code  System Response
99-16 Engine Oil Filter Differential Pressure : High - moderate severity (2)  The oil filter pressure is above the trip point of the oil filter clogging switch.  The code is logged.

Probable Causes

  • Diagnostic codes and event codes

  • Oil filter element

  • Sensor circuit component

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Step  Value  Result

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.

B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.

C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.

D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.

99-16

Result: An associated code is present.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: A 99-16 code is present.

Proceed to the next step.

Result: No active codes

STOP

2. Replace the Oil Filters

A. Restart the engine and check for an active event code for the filters that were changed.

99-16

Result: After starting the engine, the 99-16 event code is no longer active for the filter that was changed.

STOP

Result: After starting the engine, the 99-16 event code remained active for the filters that were changed.

The problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.

3. Inspect Sensor Circuit Component

A. Inspect the suspected sensor, wiring, and connectors for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.

Component

Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.

Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.

Result: A circuit component is not damaged or corroded.

Repair: Replace the sensor.
