NOTICE

Ensure that all adjustments and repairs that are carried out to the fuel system are performed by authorized personnel that have the correct training.

Before beginning ANY work on the fuel system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information and High Pressure Fuel Lines" for safety information.

Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Cleanliness of Fuel System Components" for detailed information on the standards of cleanliness that must be observed during ALL work on the fuel system.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. The engine can start automatically. Ensure that the power supply is isolated before any service or repairs is performed.

  2. Turn the fuel supply to the OFF position.

  3. Using Tooling (A) to remove fuel filter (10). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace" for the correct procedure.

  4. Remove tube assembly (1) from primary fuel filter base (4) and the fuel connection on bracket (9).

  5. Remove O-ring seal (2) (not shown) and O-ring seal (8) (not shown).

  6. Use Tooling (B) to cap tube assembly (1).

  7. Use Tooling (B) to cap the connection on primary fuel filter base (4) and the fuel connection on bracket (9).

  8. Remove tube assembly (6) from primary fuel filter base (4) and the connection for the fuel priming pump.

  9. Remove O-ring seal (5) (not shown) and O-ring seal (7) (not shown).

  10. Use Tooling (B) to cap tube assembly (6).

  11. Use Tooling (B) to cap the connection on primary fuel filter base (4) and the connection for the fuel priming pump.

  12. Remove bolts (3) from primary fuel filter base (4). Support the weight of the primary fuel filter base as the bolts are removed. Remove primary fuel filter base (4) from bracket (9).

  13. If necessary, follow Step 13.a through Step 13.c in order to disassemble primary fuel filter base (4).

    1. Remove connection (11) from primary fuel filter base (4). Remove O-ring seal (12) (not shown).

    2. Make temporary marks on elbow connection (15). Loosen locking nut (14) and remove the elbow connection from primary fuel filter base (4). Remove O-ring seal (13) (not shown).

    3. Remove connection (14) from primary fuel filter base (4). Remove O-ring seal (16) (not shown).

Installation Procedure

  1. Ensure that the primary fuel filter base is clean and free from damage. If necessary, replace the complete primary fuel filter base and filter assembly.

  2. If necessary, follow Step 2.a through Step 2.c in order to assemble primary fuel filter base (4).

    1. Install a new O-ring seal (16) (not shown) to connection (14). Install the connection to primary fuel filter base (4). Tighten the connection to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

    2. Install a new O-ring seal (13) (not shown) to elbow connection (15). Install the elbow connection to primary fuel filter base (4) and align with temporary marks. Use a suitable tool to hold the elbow connection and tighten lock nut (14) to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

      Note: Ensure that the elbow connection is still aligned to the temporary marks after the locking nut has been tightened.

    3. Install a new O-ring seal (12) (not shown) to connection (11). Install the connection to primary fuel filter base (4) and tighten the connection to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

  3. Position primary fuel filter base (4) onto bracket (9) and install bolts (3) to the primary fuel filter base hand tight. Support the weight of the primary fuel filter base as the bolts are installed.

  4. Remove the caps from the connection on primary fuel filter base (4) and the fuel connection on bracket (9). Install a new O-ring seal (2) (not shown) and a new O-ring seal (8) (not shown) to the connections on the primary fuel filter base and the fuel connection on the bracket. Ensure that the O-ring seals are correctly installed into the recesses of the connections.

  5. Remove the caps from tube assembly (1). Install the tube assembly to primary fuel filter base (4) and the fuel connection on bracket (9). Hand tighten the tube nuts on the tube assembly.

  6. Remove the caps from the connection on primary fuel filter base (4) and the fuel priming pump. Install a new O-ring seal (5) (not shown) and a new O-ring seal (7) (not shown). Ensure that the O-ring seals are correctly installed into the recesses of the connections.

  7. Remove the caps from tube assembly (6). Install the tube assembly to primary fuel filter base (4) and the connection for the fuel priming pump. Hand tighten the tube nuts on the tube assembly.

  8. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 44 N·m (32 lb ft).

  9. Tighten the tube nuts on tube assembly (1) to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

  10. Tighten the tube nuts on tube assembly (6) to a torque of 30 N·m (266 lb in).

  11. Install new fuel filter (15). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace" for the correct procedure.

  12. Connect all electrical supplies system to the engine and the control systems.

  13. Turn the fuel supply to the ON position.

  14. Remove the air from the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure.
