Simplified CDL schematic |
This diagnostic code is recorded when the Machine Control Module (MCM) does not receive expected information from the VIMS Electronic Control Module (ECM) for more than 5 seconds over the Cat Data Link (CDL). The diagnostic code has a companion code of MID 039 CID 0248 FMI 09 to indicate the problem lies in the CDL.
Test Step 1. CONFIRM COMMUNICATIONS FROM VIMS TO CAT ET.
- Connect a laptop to the VIMS Service Port in the cab.
- Open "VimsPC".
- Click "Connect".
Results:
- OK - The laptop connects to VIMS. Proceed to Test Step 2.
- NOT OK - The laptop will not connect to VIMS. Proceed to Test Step 3
Test Step 2. CONFIRM THE VIMS MAIN ECM CONFIGURATION
- Go to the "Status" page in VIMS PC to see if data is being populated. If there is a gray screen with no web page showing, the gray screen indicates a problem with the VIMS Main Config or a configuration issue in Cat ET. As a secondary check, the technician can go to the VIMS webpage onboard the truck by typing in the IP address of VIMS Main into a web browser.
Note: Refer to Special Instruction, REHS7346, "Cat Command for Hauling - 793F CMD Onboard Autonomy and Configuration Guide", "Appendix E" for the IP address of VIMS Main.
Note: The VIMS webpage access should be performed using Internet Explorer.
- In Cat ET, under the Configuration for VIMS Main, confirm the "Data Acquisition System Installation Status" is set to "Installed". If "Data Acquisition System Installation Status" is set to "Not Installed", the VIMS Main ECM will not attempt to load the configuration file. Change the "Data Acquisition System Installation Status" to "Installed" to correct the problem.
- In Cat ET, under the Summary for VIMS Main, confirm the "Application Software Part Number" matches the current required software number. If this field states "Unavailable" or the VIMS Main is generating a CID 800 FMI 11 diagnostic, indicates the VIMS Main Module could not load the configuration file for some reason. To correct this problem, confirm the file name does not contain an additional period, space, or any special characters. If the filename meets this criteria it is possible the file has become corrupt, redownload the software from the Cat Distribution Site and reinstall the configuration using VIMS PC.

Results:
- OK - The configuration is repaired and the code is corrected.
STOP
- NOT OK - The configuration is correct but the diagnostic code is still present. Proceed to Test Step 3
Test Step 3. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.
- Turn the keyswitch and disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Inspect all harness connections that are related to the CDL. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.
- Check the connectors for proper mating. Ensure that all the seals are present and in place.
- Check the harness for signs of damage or abrasion.
- Check the wires at the connector. Ensure that the wires are secured tightly into the connector. Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.
- Check the exposed wires at the connectors for nicks or signs of abrasion.
- Check for moisture inside the connector.
- Check the connectors for dirty contacts or corroded contacts.
- Check each pin and check each socket of the machine harness connectors. Ensure that the contacts are properly installed. The contacts should mate correctly when the two pieces of the connector are placed together.
Expected Result:
The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.
Results:
- OK - The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Proceed to Test Step 4.
- NOT OK - The machine harness connectors are in need of repair.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 4. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND
- The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
- Disconnect the machine harness connectors from all electronic control modules that use the CDL.
- At the machine harness for the MCM, measure the resistance between frame ground and connector contacts 8 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and 9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the Cat Data Link circuit .
Expected Result:
The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
- OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The harness circuit resistance is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5.
- NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The machine harness has failed.
Repair: There is a short between frame ground and contacts 8 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and 9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 5. CHECK FOR SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT
- The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
- All related electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.
- At the machine harness connector (AC-C43) for the MCM, perform the checks that are listed here:
- Measure the resistance between the connector contact 52 (wire 152-WH(White)) and connector contact 8 (wire 893-GN(Green)).
- Measure the resistance between connector contact 52 (wire 152-WH(White)) and connector contact 9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)).
Expected Result:
The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
- OK - The harness circuit resistance is correct. Proceed to Test Step 6.
- NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. The machine harness has failed.
Repair: There is a short between the +battery circuit and contacts 8 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and 9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 6. CHECK FOR OPEN HARNESS
- The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
- All related electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.
- Check the resistance of the CDL circuit in the machine harness:
- Measure the resistance between connector AC-C43 contact 8 (wire 893-GN(Green)) of the MCM and connector ME-C1 contact 8 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the VIMS ECM.
- Measure the resistance between connector AC-C43 contact 9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the MCM and connector ME-C1 contact 9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the VIMS ECM.
Expected Result:
The resistance measures less than 5 ohms.
Results:
- OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The CDL circuit in the machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 7.
- NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. The machine harness has failed.
Repair: The CDL circuit is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 7. CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC CODES FOR THE OTHER ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES.
- The keyswitch and disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
- One at a time, reconnect the electronic control modules that use the CDL.
- Turn the disconnect switch and the keyswitch to the ON position.
- After each of the electronic control modules has been reconnected, check for diagnostic codes that are logged against that electronic control module.
Expected Result:
Diagnostic codes are not present for the other electronic control modules.
Results:
- OK - Diagnostic codes are not present for the other electronic control modules. The VIMS ECM has failed.
Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the failure is not found, replace the ECM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR8394, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
STOP
- NOT OK - Diagnostic codes are present for the other electronic control modules. The MCM has failed.
Repair: It is unlikely that the MCM has failed. Exit this procedure. Perform this procedure again. If the failure is not found, replace the MCM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR8394, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
STOP
