Engine Overspeeds

Usage:

3512B 9G5
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an engine overspeed or use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active.

Table 1
Event Code
J1939 Code and Description  Conditions which Generate this Code  System Response
190-15 Engine Speed : High - least severe (1)  The engine rpm has exceeded the trip point for engine overspeed for the delay time.  The code is logged. The ECM may shut down the engine.
190-0 Engine Speed : High - most severe (3)

Probable Causes

  • Turbocharger

  • Intake air and starting aids

  • Drop of load

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Proper Operation of the Turbocharger

A. Check for proper operation of the turbocharger.

B. Check for any oil that may be leaking into the air inlet.

Turbocharger

Result: The turbocharger is leaking oil into the inlet.

Repair: Repair or replace the turbocharger.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

Result: The turbocharger is not leaking oil into the inlet.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Intake Air

A. Check for combustible gases in the surrounding atmosphere.

B. Check for proper operation of starting aids (if equipped).

Air quality

Result: The atmosphere has combustible gases.

Repair: Do not operate the engine in an environment with combustible gases.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

Result: The atmosphere does not have combustible gases.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

3. Check for a Sudden Drop of Engine Load

A. Converse with the operator about the overspeed event.

Engine load

Result: The operator confirms that the overspeed was caused by a sudden drop of engine load.

Repair: Decrease the load on the engine gradually.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
