BYPASS mode - Load is powered by the bypass input line through the static switch

Bypass static switch - Internal automatic bypass

C, Caps, Capacitors - Device that can hold a charge to filter unwanted fluctuations

CAN - Controller Area Network, Cat 5 communication connection cables

CB - Circuit breaker

Cell - Primary unit of a battery which is typically 2.25 VDC

Cde th - Command Thyristor Signal

Choke - An inductor which is intended to filter or choke out unwanted signals

Chopper - Inductive filter used to provide high impedance to an undesirable frequency

Commutation - Reversing of current direction to turn on and off thyristors in a UPS Rectifier or Inverter

Contactor - An electrically controlled switch (a relay) used for switching a power or control circuit. KA1 and KA2 are contactors.

Critical load - Equipment that must have an uninterrupted power input to prevent damage

CT - Current Transformer

DC or dc - Direct current, or voltage

Delta - 3-phase circuit configuration typically without a neutral line

Diode - Semiconductor device that will conduct current in only one direction

Earth ground - A ground circuit that has contact with the earth

Electrolyte - Acid solution surrounding battery cells to create chemical reaction for battery power

ELV - Extra-Low Voltage

ELM - Electro Magnetic Interference. Magnetically induced noise from power lines and transformers.

EPO - Emergency Power Off

Genset - Generator

GND - Electrical ground

H or Hr - Hour

Hz - Hertz, frequency measurement unit, 1Hz is1 cycle per second

I - Current

Inverter - An electrical circuit that generates an AC voltage source from a DC voltage source

IGBT - Insulated gate bipolar transistors. Power transistor that uses voltage to turn on and off.

I/O - Input/Output

Inductor - A passive device that stores electrical energy in the form of a magnetic field. Normally consists of a wire loop or coil. Inductors are typically used to smooth out voltage fluctuations in power supply circuits.

Internal Bypass - Static Bypass (Internal Bypass) - Is the bypass which will support the critical load when the inverter is not online. Function is automatic.

Inverter - An electrical circuit that generates an AC voltage source from a DC voltage source

JBUS - A high speed interconnect that provides packet-switched, split-transaction features

KA1 and KA2 - UPS Contactors. KA1 - Mains Input Contact Switch. KA2 - Bypass Input Contact Switch.

KVA - Kilovolt-Ampere is equal to 1000 Volt-Ampere

KW - True power. Kilo-Watt = 1000 w

L - Line

LCD - Liquid-Crystal Display

LCM - Life Cycle Maintenance/Monitoring

LED - Light Emitting Diode

LEM - Current transformer

Mains or Mains 1 - Main AC input source (Q1)

Mains 2 - Bypass AC input source (Q4S)

Maintenance bypass - The wrap around bypass which will support the critical load when the unit is shut down. Function is manual and can be internal to the UPS module or external to the UPS.

PFC Boost Rectifier - Rectifier used in the UPS

PN - Part number

Pn - Nominal power

Power Factor - The ratio of the actual power of an alternating or pulsating current. Ratio is measured by a wattmeter, to the apparent power, as indicated by ammeter and voltmeter readings. The power factor of an inductor, capacitor, or insulator is an expression of the losses.

Power Factor Correction - Design technique normally applied at the input of off-line converters. Improves the power factor and minimizes harmonics generated by the converter onto the AC power line.

PWM - Pulse Width Modulation. Pattern of firing signals in a pulse train to generate a sine wave

Q1 - UPS input isolation switch

Q3BP - UPS maintenance bypass switch

Q4S - UPS bypass switch

Q5N - UPS output switch

RC - Resistor capacitor

Rectifier - An electrical circuit that generates DC voltage from an AC voltage source

Redundancy - Inclusion of secondary components in a system to back up the primary components

Remote Emergency Power Off - A switch used for shutting down electrical equipment from a location away from the equipment

REPO - Remote Emergency Power Off

RMS - Root Mean Square

RS232 - An asynchronous serial data interchange standard. RS-232 links between equipment are normally limited to 50 feet (16 m).

SBC - System Bypass Cabinet

SCR - Silicon controlled rectifier

SCR - Silicon controlled rectifier. Three-terminal active device that acts as a gated diode. The gate terminal is used to turn on the device allowing current to pass from cathode to anode.

SELV - Safety Extra-Low Voltage

Sinusoidal - Varying in proportion to the sine of an angle or time function. AC voltage in which the instantaneous value is equal to the sine of the phase angle times the peak value.

Slew Rate - Transfer speed of inverter to static switch

Static Bypass - Is the bypass which will support the critical load when the inverter is not online. Function is automatic.

SS, Static Transfer - A solid state switching mechanism electronically controlled to pass AC power directly from the utility to an output load

System Bypass - The external wrap around bypass which can isolate an existing maintenance bypass.

THD - Total Harmonic Distortion. Quality of power generation due to presence of harmonics

THDI - Total Harmonic Distortion Interference

Thyristor - Special type of semiconductor used to switch on and power such as an SCR or Diode
