C27 Petroleum Generator Set Engines Caterpillar

Engine Shutdown Occurrence

Usage:

C27 EGG
Use this procedure if the following diagnostic trouble code is active. Also, use this procedure if a problem is suspected with the circuit for an engine shutdown switch. Access the monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes.

Table 1
Engine Event
J1939 Code and Description  Conditions that Generate the Code  System Response
970-31 Engine Auxiliary Engine Shutdown Switch  The auxiliary engine shutdown switch is use to shut down the engine.
The emergency stop switch is use to shut down the engine.
An emergency stop command is received by the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) over the CAN data link from the control panel.
The code is logged.
The ECM disables injection. The engine is shut down.

Probable Causes

  • Engine shutdown using the emergency stop switch at the control panel

  • Engine shutdown using the customer stop switch

  • Faulty circuit for the emergency stop switch or the customer stop switch

  • Activation of an engine shutdown switch by excessive vibration

Recommended Actions

Intentional Engine Shutdown

Ask the operator if the engine shutdown was intentional. Ensure that the reason for the shutdown has been corrected. Reset the control system. Resume normal engine operation.

If the stop was accidental, reset the control system. Resume normal operation.

Check the Circuit for the Stop Switches

Note: There are two inputs at the ECM for an engine shutdown. A customer stop switch and an emergency stop switch can be hard wired at these inputs. If configured, each of these circuits must remain grounded to digital return in order for the engine to run. The normal stop is not the customer stop switch or the emergency stop switch.

Inspect the wiring between the switches and the connector of the ECM. Look for damage and/or for corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".

Troubleshoot the engine control switch according to the testing procedures. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Shutdown - Test" for details.

Inspect the Stop Switches

Inspect the stop switches for evidence of damage that has been caused by vibration. Disassemble the switches. Inspect the components for looseness, cracks, and abrasion. Use an ohmmeter and toggle the switches in order to check for proper electrical operation.

Replace any faulty components.
