C27 Petroleum Generator Set Engines Caterpillar

Oil Temperature Is High

Usage:

C27 EGG
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a high engine oil temperature. Use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic trouble codes is active. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about engine events.

Table 1
Engine Event
J1939 Code and Description  Conditions that Generate the Code  System Response
175-0 Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - most severe (3)  The oil temperature has risen above the trip point for the specified delay time.  The code is logged.
175-15 Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - least severe (1)
175-16 Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - moderate severity (2)

Probable Causes

Engine Oil

  • Low engine oil level

  • Incorrect engine oil

  • Verify the engine oil temperature.

Engine Oil Cooler

  • Restriction in the engine oil cooler core

  • Engine oil cooler bypass valve

Engine Coolant Temperature

  • High engine coolant temperature

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in order.

Low Engine Oil Level

Check for the correct oil level. If necessary, add engine oil to the crankcase.

Incorrect Engine Oil

Ensure that the engine is supplied with the correct engine oil. For the correct engine oil to use, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Verify Oil Temperature

Check the actual engine oil temperature with a calibrated test gauge. Compare the oil temperature reading from Cat ET to the reading on the test gauge.

Restriction in the Engine Oil Cooler Core

Check the engine oil cooler core for damage and for plugging. Clean the engine oil cooler core or replace the engine oil cooler core, if necessary.

Engine Oil Cooler Bypass Valve

Inspect the components of the engine oil cooler bypass valve for damage. Clean the engine oil cooler bypass valve and clean the bore for the valve. Ensure that the bypass valve is not stuck in the open position. Replace the components of the bypass valve, if necessary.

High Engine Coolant Temperature

If a high coolant temperature condition is also occurring, refer to the symptom Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Is High".
