Engine Oil Cooler - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.

Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.

Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.


------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.


  1. If equipped with a sound suppression arrangement, refer to Special Instruction, "Installation of the 351-3820 Sound Suppression Ar (If Equipped)" or Special Instruction, "Installation of the 350-2312 Sound Suppression Ar (If Equipped)" for specific panel locations and the correct removal or installation procedure.

  2. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "System Pressure Release".

  3. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedure.

  4. Disconnect harness assemblies (1). Disconnect hose assembly (2). Disconnect hose (3).

  5. Attach a suitable lifting device onto air inlet manifold (4). The weight of air inlet manifold (4) is approximately 79 kg (175 lb). Remove bolts (5). Remove air inlet manifold (4).

    Note: Inspect the gaskets for wear and damage. Replace the gaskets, if necessary.

  6. Remove plug (6) to drain tube assembly (7). Remove tube assembly (7).

  7. Attach a suitable lifting device onto tube assembly (8). The weight of tube assembly (8) is approximately 41 kg (90 lb). Remove bolts (9).

  8. Disconnect tube (10). Remove tube assembly (8).

  9. Disconnect hose assemblies (11). Remove bolts (12) and bolts (13). Remove elbow (14).

  10. Disconnect hose assembly (15). Remove bolts (16). Remove elbow (17).

  11. Attach a suitable lifting device onto oil coolers (18). The weight of oil coolers (18) is approximately 76 kg (168 lb).

  12. Remove bolts (19) and the washers. Remove bolts (20) and the washers.

  13. Remove oil coolers (18).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install oil cooler (18) in the reverse order of removal.

    Note: Position tube evenly between the end mounting flanges. Hand tighten the mounting bolts at each end of the tube. Torque all hardware starting at one end of the tube and then proceed to torque the opposite end of the tube.
