The selection of a generator is an important factor that defines the specification for a generator set. The selection of a generator in many cases requires the same attention as the selection of the engine. Physical performance characteristics and electrical performance characteristics of the application are significant in the selection of a generator. The following basic features are specified initially: Physical size, Voltage, Power rating and Frequency Range. Also, the following complex features are given careful attention: Control panel, Inertia, Pitch, Synchronous reactance and Reactive capability
Selection of features that affect the life of the product and maintenance cost of generators are not receiving the consideration that is needed. The following basic features of the generator affect the life of the product and maintenance cost :
- Types of generator windings (form wound winding or random wound winding)
- Coastal insulation
- Space heaters
- Temperature detectors
- Oversized generator for the application
Indoor standby applications are optimum operating environments for generators. These generator applications do not require the same features as a generator that is operating in harsh environments. Harsh operating environments that have high condensing humidity and airborne materials that are abrasive or corrosive will benefit from these features of the generator. These features should not be eliminated from consideration in order to save initial costs. The increased life of the product and reduced maintenance cost will offset the initial savings.
The following publications will be updated in order to further assist in the selection of the generator and the application.
