Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

This document provides two procedures:

  • Track seal leak check – pulls a vacuum (optional)

  • Track joint lubrication – adds oil to prolong track joint life

8T-3115 Lubricator Gp - Portable Track

The 8T-3115 Lubricator Gp - Portable Track provides the following benefits:

  • Provides easy method of lubricating track link joints in the field

  • Can be used to evacuate track link joints and then to fill the track link joints to the correct level

  • Easier to transport than the former 5P-2420 Lubricator Gp - Track, and does not need compressed air to operate

This track joint inspection can be performed while the track is installed on the machine.

The tractor should be operated for a few minutes prior to inspection. Operating the tractor will allow for articulation of the components and breaking loose of any debris around the seals that could inhibit the vacuum leak check.

Note: Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8557 for the operating instructions for 8T-3115 Lubricator Gp - Portable Track.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.

Required Tools

Table 1
Required Tools
Item  Qty  Part Number  Description
8T-3115  Lubricator Gp - portable Track
226-1905  Pin Punch 3/16 or equivalent
242-3466  Synthetic Gear Oil (75W140)
6Y-0473  Plastic Plug
5P-7419  Plug Installer

Inspection and Lubrication Procedure

  1. Drive plastic plug (bullet) (4) into rubber stopper with 4.76 mm (0.187 inch) (3/16) diameter punch (2). To prevent damaging of plastic plug (bullet) (4), a larger diameter punch may be required to break the plug loose initially. Drive Plug (4) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) before the plug will fall into the track pin reservoir.

  2. Move 3-way ball valve lever (A) to the left side. moving 3-way ball valve lever (A) to the left side will allow a vacuum to be pulled on the track joint & associated seals.

    Illustration 3g06243648

  3. Insert lubricator tip (B) into rubber stopper (C). Pull 20-25" (67.73-84.66 kPa) vacuum on the pin by using the vacuum pump handle. Pulling may evacuate some of the pin oil. Some oil that is below the lubricator tip may remain in the pin. Occasionally check the level of used oil in the plastic catch bottle on the pump canister so that the oil does not overflow.

  4. Monitor the gauge for 30 seconds for loss of vacuum. A slow leak (1” Hg (3.39 kPa) in 30 seconds may not warrant immediate pin replacement, but should be monitored. However, a rapid drop to 0 psi (0 kPa) should be considered a failed pin and should be replaced as soon as possible. Molybdenum (NLGI #1) grease 452-5996 can be injected into a failed pin to help slow the internal wear until repairs can be made.

  5. After the vacuum check is complete, jog 3-way ball valve lever (A) back and forth to relieve the vacuum. Pressure should equalize to 0 psi (0 kPa).

Track Joint Lubrication

    Illustration 5g06243693

  1. Set handle lever (A) to the pressure right-hand side.

  2. Use the pressure/oil fill handle of the pump to pressurize the joint slowly. Do not exceed 103.4 kPa (15 psi). Pumping the handle will begin to fill the joint with oil. This may take a few repetitions of building pressure and waiting for oil to be pushed into the joint. If pressure continues to drop and will not stabilize, the pressure drop is a sign of a failed joint and repairs should be made as necessary.

  3. Once the pressure stabilizes, the joint is full and lubricator tip (B) can be removed. Wait a few seconds to allow a small amount of oil to leak out. A small amount of oil leaking keeps the joint from being overfilled and allows room for thermal expansion while in service.

  4. Install new 6Y-0473 Plastic Plug (4) using 5P-7419 Plug Installer (5). Clean excess oil off the end of the pin.
