Start By:

  1. Remove the axle.

Note: For the oscillating axle, remove the axle support. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Axle Support - Remove and Install".

  1. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to axle (3). The weight of axle (3) is approximately 1360 kg (3000 lb).

  2. Install axle (3) onto Tooling (B).

  3. Remove bolts (2) and axle housing (1). The weight of axle housing (1) is approximately 500 kg (1100 lb).

  4. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the opposite end of axle housing (1).

  5. Reposition axle housing (1) onto Tooling (C).

  6. Remove bolts (5) and ring gear (4). The weight of ring gear (4) is approximately 55 kg (121 lb)

  7. Remove O-ring seal (6).

  8. Attach Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to planetary carrier (8). The weight of planetary carrier (8) is approximately 80 kg (175 lb).

  9. Expand retaining ring (7) to release retaining ring (7) and use the suitable lifting device to lift planetary carrier (8) out of the axle housing.

    Note: Planetary carrier (8) must be disassembled to remove retaining ring (7) from planetary carrier (8).

  10. Use a suitable hammer and a punch to push spring pin (9) in planetary shaft (12).

  11. Remove planetary shaft (12), two thrust washers (10), and planetary gear (11) .

  12. Remove bearing (13) from planetary gear (11).

  13. Remove spring pin (9) from planetary shaft (12).

  14. Repeat Step 10 through Step 13 for the removal of the other two planetary gears.

  15. Use Tooling (E) to remove bearing nut (14).

  16. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to axle housing (1). Put slight lifting tension on axle housing (1).

    Note: Bearing cone (15) will be removed at the same time as axle housing (1).

  17. Install Tooling (F) onto axle housing (1). Use the center stud to push the axle shaft from axle housing (1). Make sure that upward pressure is constantly applied.

  18. Use the suitable lifting device to remove axle housing (1) and bearing cone (15) from the axle shaft. The weight of axle housing (1) is approximately 205 kg (450 lb).

  19. Remove bearing cone (15) from axle housing (1).

  20. Remove bearing cup (16) and the dowels.

  21. Remove Duo-Cone seal (17) and bearing cup (18) from the opposite end of axle housing (1).

  22. Remove Duo-Cone seal (20) and bearing cone (19) from the axle shaft.
