Hydraulic System Oil Filter - Replace

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note: The Hystat transmission and the hydraulic system use a common tank.
- The hydraulic filter is on the right side of the machine. Open the access door on the right side of the machine.

Illustration 2 g06047080 Some components are removed for clarity - Remove the hydraulic filter element by using the following steps.
- Place a pan under the filter.
- Remove the drain plug. Then, loosen the filter housing with a strap type wrench to allow air entry into the filter housing to allow for oil drainage.
- Allow some time for complete drainage of oil from the filter housing.
- Remove the filter housing from the oil filter base.
- Clean the filter element mounting base. Remove any part of the filter element gasket that remains on the filter element mounting base.
- Replace a new filter element into the housing. Apply a light coat of oil to the gasket of the new filter element.
- Install the filter housing onto the filter base. When the gasket contacts the filter element mounting base, tighten the housing to a torque of
40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft) . Use a32 mm (1.25 inch) box end wrench. - Install the drain plug. Tighten to a torque of
12.5 ± 2.5 N·m (9.2 ± 1.8 lb ft)
Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g03803970 - Maintain the hydraulic oil level so the oil is visible in the sight gauge . Add oil, if necessary.

- Inspect the gasket on the cap for damage. Replace the gasket, if necessary.
