Combining Machined Connecting Rods and Fractured Connecting Rods in Some On-highway Engines{1225}

Usage:

C13 JAM
Engine:
C13 (S/N: KCB1-UP; LEE1-UP; JAM1-UP)

Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information.

This Special Instruction describes the procedure to identify

Certain combinations of connecting rods in C13 On-Highway Engines are causing engine vibration. The vibration is occurring when an engine has both the 223-9150 Connecting Rod (Fractured) (3) and the 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (1). A change was made to the 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (1) to a reduced mass connecting rod (2). The connecting rod can be identified by the part number and the engineering change level. These numbers are located on the shank (A) of the connecting rod.

Illustration 1g01389866

(A) Location of the part number and the change level for the connecting rod

(1) 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (Change level 00 to 04)

(2) 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (Change level 05 to 06)

(3) 223-9150 Connecting Rod

The 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (Change level 00 to 04) (1) cannot be used with 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (Change level 05 to 06) (2) or with the 223-9150 Connecting Rod (Fractured) (3). The change can also be identified by observing the width of the area for the bolt boss on the connecting rod cap. Refer to Illustration 1.

Connecting Rod (1) cannot be mixed with connecting rods (2) or (3). However, 160-8229 Connecting Rod (Machined) (2) can be mixed with 223-9150 Connecting Rod (Fractured) (3) in the same engine.
