C27 and C32 Engines for Caterpillar Built Machines Caterpillar

Intake Manifold Air Temperature Is High

Usage:

990K A9P
Table 1 lists the diagnostic trouble codes for high intake manifold air temperature.

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
CDL Code     Code Description     Comments
E539(1)     High Intake Manifold Air Temperature     The code indicates that the temperature of the intake air into the engine has risen above the programmed threshold.
Engine power may be derated.
E539(2)     High Intake Manifold Air Temperature
E539(3)     High Intake Manifold Air Temperature

Follow the troubleshooting procedure in order to identify the root cause of the problem.

Table 2
Associated Code
CDL Code     WCI
E1092     (2)

Table 3
Troubleshooting Test Steps     Values     Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) and the service tool connector.

B. Determine if there are any associated or logged codes.

Codes

Result: No codes are active at this time, but a high intake manifold air temperature exists for the engine.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: A E1092 is active.

Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" in order to troubleshoot the associated diagnostic code.

If the repair does not resolve the problem, proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: An E539 event code is active. There is a high intake manifold air temperature for the engine.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Inspection points for the ATAAC

Table 4
Troubleshooting Test Steps     Values     Results

2. Check the ATAAC for Restrictions (if equipped)

A. Inspect the exterior surface of the ATAAC for excessive buildup of dirt or debris. Also verify that the fins of the ATAAC are not damaged.

Restrictions

Result: The surface of the ATAAC is not damaged and the ATAAC does not have an excessive buildup of dirt or debris.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The surface of the ATAAC is damaged or the ATAAC has an excessive buildup of dirt or debris.

Repair: Clean the ATAAC, if necessary. If the ATAAC is damaged, replace the ATAAC.

If the repair does not resolve the problem, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check the Operation of the Cooling Fan

A. Verify that the engine's cooling fan is working properly.

B. If the fan is belt driven, verify that the belt tension is adequate. Also, verify that the clutch is operating properly.

C. If the fan is hydraulically driven, verify that there is no leakage around the motor and that the pressure for the fan is adequate.

Cooling Fan

Result: The fan drive system is not working properly.

Repair: If the fan is belt driven, perform the necessary adjustments or perform any necessary repairs to the clutch or the belt tensioner. Refer to Testing and Adjusting for details.

If the fan is hydraulically driven, repair any leaks that have been discovered. Ensure that the control system for the fan is operating properly. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Cooling Fan Control - Test" for details.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
