Calibration weight is the weight that was used to calibrate the application. The calibration weight is merely used as a multiplier. The load in the bucket during the calibration relates mathematically to the calculated weight of the bucket. Use the standard method of entering data for the display to input the new calibration weight. The new calibration weight is used for all future bucket weight calculations and the displayed bucket weight.

Note: Manually adjusting the calibration weight is not recommended for fine-tuning the system. For this purpose, use the Simple Calibration procedure described below.

Pre-Calibration Steps

Before any system calibration (not necessary for Simple Calibration), the following steps must be performed:

  1. Place the ride control in the AUTO or OFF position.

  2. Exercise the machine linkage by performing 5-10 full dig dump cycles to ensure that the implements are properly lubricated.

  3. Ensure that the hydraulic oil temperature is higher than 40° C (104° F).

  4. Park the machine on a flat, level surface to calibrate.

To calibrate with the display:

  1. Enable Service Mode.

    Reference: See Service Mode portion of this document to Enable Service Mode.

  2. Go to the calibration submenu.

    Calibrations > Payload Screen

  3. Select payload calibration.

Perform a full calibration (empty and full bucket calibration) after:

  • An out of calibration fault becomes active

  • Major linkage service

  • Sensor repair

  • Bucket change

CPM Calibration with Hose Burst Protection Installed

Note: Hose burst protection is only available on 950M and 962M Medium Wheel Loaders.

  1. In Cat ET, configure the "Lift Cylinder Load Hold Check Valve Installation Status" to "Not Installed"

  2. Using the keypad, set Ride Control to Service Mode (always on).

  3. Perform the empty bucket calibration. When it gets to the step instructing the user to set Ride Control to Off or Auto, ignore the step and press next, and complete the calibration.

  4. Perform the full bucket calibration. Again, ignore the instruction to set Ride Control to Off or Auto.

  5. Return Ride Control to the desired mode.

  6. In Cat ET, configure the "Lift Cylinder Load Hold Check Valve Installation Status" back to "Installed"

Empty Bucket Calibration

The first calibration is the empty bucket calibration. To perform the Empty Bucket Calibration, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Empty Bucket Calibration. The button will turn blue and the Empty Bucket Calibration Warning Screen will appear.

  2. Read the Warning Screen using the Down Arrow to progress through the pages.

  3. Press "OK". The button will turn blue and the Empty Bucket Calibration start screen will appear.

  4. Select the "OK" button. The button will turn blue and the Empty Bucket Calibration Setup Conditions screen will appear.

  5. Use the Down Arrow to scroll through all the Setup Conditions.

  6. Once the Setup Conditions are met, press the Next button (1). Conditions include:

    1. Set ride control to the AUTO or OFF position (If equipped).

    2. Verify that the bucket is empty.

  7. Select the "OK" button. The button will turn blue and the remaining Setup Condition Screens will appear if necessary. If the Setup Conditions have been met, the screen will skip that step automatically. Conditions include:

    1. Exercise implements to warm hydraulic oil above 40° C (104° F). If the hydraulic oil is dropped below 30° C (86° F) after passing this step, the calibration will revert to this step.

    2. Slowly place the bucket into the full rackback position.

    3. Slowly lower the linkage to the minimum position and bottom out the lift cylinders.

    4. Set Engine Speed to High Idle.

      Note: If at any point during the calibration the setup conditions are no longer met, the calibration will return to the unmet condition step. All steps completed after this unmet condition will need to be completed again.

  8. Release the Levers. The operator will be warned that the next set of lifts will be performed at Slow Lift Velocity.

  9. Press the Next button (1).

  10. Lift and lower the empty bucket at least two times. If the second full lift does not match the first full lift, the operator will be prompted to lift the empty bucket again. The procedure should be repeated until the operator is instructed to release the lever.

    Note: The lift must be representative of a typical empty bucket lift. Two consecutive lifts must match sufficiently for the lift to be representative of a typical empty bucket lift. If consecutive lifts do not match, verify the following:

    • Lift arm motion is smooth and of a consistent speed through the lift

    • Linkage is properly lubricated

    • Hydraulic system is working properly

    Note: If at any point during the calibration the setup conditions are no longer met, the calibration will return to the unmet condition step. The slow velocity calibration has been saved and will not need to be performed again.

  11. Release the Lever. The operator will be warned that the next series of lifts will be at full raise velocity.

  12. Press the Next button (1).

  13. Lift and lower the empty bucket at least two times. If the second empty lift does not match the first empty lift, the operator will be prompted to lift the empty bucket again. The procedure should be repeated until the empty bucket weight calibration success screen is displayed.

    When the calibration is successful, an empty bucket weigh calibration success screen will be displayed.

  14. Press "OK".

Full Bucket Calibration

The next calibration is the full bucket calibration. To perform the Full Bucket Calibration, follow the steps below:

  1. Load the calibration weight into the bucket. Use a bucket load of material that will be used in day-to-day operation with the loader. Lightly shake the bucket so the material will settle, then lift the bucket to remove loose material.

    Note: An alternative method is to use a fabricated reference weight that is at least 80% of the configured rated operating capacity (ROC) of the loader. This reference weight should have a center of gravity that closely matches that of a bucket load of material. An example of such a reference weight would be a section of steel pipe (or culvert) of a length and diameter that will fit in the bucket (laterally). The pipe is filled with concrete to attain the recommended 80% of the configured ROC, of the loader.

  2. Select the Full Bucket Calibration. The button will turn blue and the Full Bucket Calibration Warning Screen will appear.

  3. Read the Warning Screen using the Down Arrow to progress through the pages.

  4. Press "OK". The button will turn blue and the Full Bucket Calibration start screen will appear.

  5. Select the "OK" button. The button will turn blue and the Full Bucket Calibration Setup Conditions screen will appear.

  6. Use the Down Arrow to scroll through all the Setup Conditions.

  15. Press "OK". A Calibration Weight Entry Required pop-up will be displayed reminding you to enter the calibration weight. This pop up may be hidden behind the Active Out of Calibration Diagnostic.

  16. In the Payload Calibrations menu, select "Calibration Weight". The button will turn blue and the Calibration Weight screen will show.

  17. Enter the value of the calibration weight used during the calibration.

    Note: If using the recommended calibration weight, the value will need to be reentered to clear the 2183-13 Payload Monitoring System Out of Calibration Diagnostic.

  18. Press "OK". The button will highlight in blue and the calibration weight will be accepted. The "Payload System On" popup will appear and a System Zero will be requested.
