Tools are available to hone the cylinder liners for 6.25" bore six cylinder engines so new style pistons can be used as replacement parts. The tools can be used to remove the wear ridge (condition where two surface levels can be felt) near the top of a used cylinder liner. Removal of the wear ridges is necessary if 7N5037 Piston Assemblies are to be used with cylinder liners that have operated with the earlier piston assemblies. The top ring groove is .040" (1.02 mm) higher and the intermediate (center) ring groove is .040" (1.02 mm) lower on 7N5037 Piston Assemblies than on the earlier piston assemblies. If a 7N5037 Piston Assembly is operated in a used cylinder liner that was not honed, the result can be damage to the piston assembly.
The 5P8595 Honing Tool Group and the FT1371 Holding Fixture are used with other tools to hone the cylinder liners. Instructions to hone the cylinder liners and a list of all the necessary tools are given in Special Instructions, Form No. SEHS7220. Drawings to make the fabricated holding fixture are available from your Division Service Manager.
