Introduction

This publication contains the information for the installation of the Generator Information Plate.

Do not perform any procedures or order any parts until you read this publication. Do not perform any procedures or order any parts until you understand this publication thoroughly.

Between 1March 2005, and 10October 2006, inclusive, certain packaged engine generator sets were shipped with incorrect reactance and per unit impedance characteristics printed on the generator information plate.

Caterpillar's Technical Marketing Information (TMI) system shall be considered as the one safe source for the generator reactance and per unit impedance characteristics.

Note: Reactances and per unit impedances may be used by engineers, contractors, service personnel, maintenance personnel, and others in order to calculate available fault current in an electrical distribution system.

------ WARNING! ------

When servicing or repairing electric power generation equipment:

  • Make sure the unit is either locked out or tagged DO NOT OPERATE.

  • Remove all fuses.

  • Make sure the generator engine is stopped.

  • Make sure all batteries are disconnected.

  • Make sure all capacitors are discharged.

  • Make sure residual voltage in the rotor, stator and the generator is discharged.

Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death.

Installation of the Generator Information Plate

  1. Check to see if your generator set was packaged between 1March 2005, and 10October 2006. If your generator set was packaged during these dates, refer to Step 1.a if you are a end user. Refer to Step 1.b if you are a Caterpillar dealer.

    1. If end users determine that a new Generator Information Plate is required, contact your Caterpillar dealer.

    1. As dealers determine or are made aware of the need to provide generator reactance and/or per unit impedance information, the dealer's shall first consult with TMI, then compare the TMI data to that printed on the generator information plate. If any discrepancies are noted, dealers may then contact the Application Support Center (ASC) and request a new Generator Information Plate. Please provide the ASC with the following:

      • Generator arrangement number

      • Serial number of the generator

      • Package sales order number

A new generator information plate will be created and sent to you at no charge.

  1. After receiving the new generator information plate, remove the existing generator information plate and destroy the existing information plate.

  1. Next, install the new plate.

If dealers wish to obtain new generator information plate for each generator purchased that was built between 1March 2005, and 19October 2006, inclusive, please submit one request to the ASC providing the above information.
