The switch provides two inputs to the ECM. The inputs are Normally Open and Normally Closed. During normal operation, one of the inputs is open and the other input is grounded. A problem is detected when both inputs to the ECM are in the open state at the same time.
This diagnostic code is recorded when both inputs to the ECM are in the open state at the same time.
The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
- There is an open wire between the ground circuit and the ECM.
- There is an open wire between the Normally Open contact of the switch and the ECM.
- There is an open wire between the Normally Closed contact of the switch and the ECM.
- The Switch has failed.
- The ECM has failed. ECM failure is unlikely.
Note: Ensure that the CID 0141 FMI 02 is active.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
- At machine harness, check continuity from J1-13 (200-BK) to the J1-53 (K885-PU) contact and to the J1-52 (K884-YL) contact.
- Check the continuity while the switch is in the Up, Middle, and Down position.
Expected Result:
The value that is measured matches the value that is listed in Table 1.
Results:
- OK - The value that is measured matches the value that is listed in the table. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - The value that is measured does not match the value that is listed in the table. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE SWITCH CIRCUIT AT THE CONSOLE

- Remove the wiring from the back of th switch.
- Check continuity between each of the Normally Closed contact and the Normally open contact and its appropriate ground on the back of the switch.
- Check the continuity when the switch is in the Up, Middle, and Down positions.
Expected Result:
The value that is measured matches the value that is listed in Table 2.
Results:
- OK - The value that is measured matches the value that is listed in the table.
Repair: The machine harness has failed. The ground circuit (200-BK), the Normally Open circuit (wire K884-YL), or the Normally Closed circuit (wire K885-PU) is open in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
- NOT OK - The value that is measured does not match the value that is listed in the table.
Repair: The switch has failed. Replace the autoshift switch.
STOP
Test Step 3. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
- Clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
- Reconnect all harness connectors.
- Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
- Clear all inactive diagnostic codes.
- Operate the autoshift switch.
- Determine if the CID 0368 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active.
Expected Result:
The CID 0141 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active.
Results:
- YES - CID 0141 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active.
Repair: Check the switch circuit wires in the machine harness again. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool, if available, in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The wiggle test can detect momentary or intermittent shorts or opens in the machine wiring harness. If the diagnostic code is still active and the cause cannot be found, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
STOP
- NO - CID 0141 FMI 02 diagnostic code is not present.
Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.
