Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns. Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns. Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. |
NOTICE |
---|
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the cooling system information in Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations". Failure to do so could result in damage to the cooling system components. |
Note: This machine was filled at the factory with Cat Extended Life Coolant.
If the coolant in the machine is changed to Extended Life Coolant from another type of coolant, see Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".
Your machine is equipped with fast fill ports that are located within the machines service center. You may drain fluids through these ports or you may add fluids through these ports.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Service Center" for additional information.
Procedure for Changing the Coolant
- Open the access door (1) on the top of the engine compartment. Slowly remove the cooling system pressure cap.
Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" for information that pertains to containing fluid spillage.
Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g02597558 Coolant system drain valve location - Open the drain valve and allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container. The drain valve is located under the rear of the machine.
- Flush the cooling system. Follow step 3.a through Step 3.h in order to flush the cooling system.
- Close the drain valve.
- Fill the cooling system with clean water.
- Install the pressure cap.
- Start the engine and run the engine until the engine reaches operating temperature.
- Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool.
- Loosen the pressure cap slowly in order to relieve any pressure in the cooling system.
- Open the drain valve and allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
- Flush the radiator with clean water until the draining water is transparent.
- Close the drain valve.
- Replace the water temperature regulator.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Water Temperature Regulator - Replace" for the correct procedure.
- Add the Extended Life Coolant. Refer to the following topics:
- Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations"
- Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)"
- After the cooling system has been filled, perform the following procedures during initial start-up:
- Start the engine without the filler cap.
- Run the engine at low idle for 10 minutes.
- Then, increase the engine speed to a high idle until the water temperature regulator is open and the coolant level is stabilized.
- Observe sight gauge (2) and maintain the coolant at the proper level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant Level - Check".
- Install the cooling system pressure cap and close the access door.
- Stop the engine.
Note: The pressure must be removed from the system before service can be performed. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "System Pressure Release".
