VIMSTM 3G Main ECM Product Link circuit |
Note: MID 161 is generated by one ECM, this ECM is referred to as the following in various venues:
- Communication Gateway 1 ECM
- VIMS Main Module, in Caterpillar® Electronic Technician Cat® (ET)
- VIMS 3G Main ECM, in this publication
This diagnostic code is recorded when data-link for telemetry from the VIMS 3G Main ECM has an abnormal update rate.
Test Step 1. VERIFY THAT THE BROADCAST SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY
- Verify that the broadcast system (transmitter) is operating correctly.
Expected Result:
The broadcast system (transmitter) is operating correctly.
Results:
- YES - The broadcast system is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 2.
- NO - The broadcast system is not operating correctly.
Repair: Repair the broadcast system.
STOP
Test Step 2. CHECK FOR AN OPEN IN THE HARNESS
- Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
- Disconnect the connector from the VIMS 3G Main ECM .
- Disconnect the RS232 port from the broadcast system.
- Measure the resistance of the circuits listed in Table 1:
Show/hide table
Table 1 VIMS 3G Main ECM         RS232 Broadcast Port     Contact 27 (wire N691-OR)     to     Contact 5 (wire N691-OR)     Contact 35 (wire N958-PK)     to     Contact 7 (wire N958-PK)     Contact 43 (wire N980-GN)     to     Contact 8 (wire N980-GN)
Expected Result:
All resistance is low.
Results:
- OK - All resistance is low. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - All resistance is not low.
Repair: Repair or replace the harness.
STOP
Test Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS FOR SHORTS TO GROUND
- Verify that the disconnect switch is off.
- Verify that the harness remains disconnected from the VIMS 3G Main ECM and the broadcast system.
- Measure the resistance from frame ground to the contacts on the connector for the following VIMS 3G Main ECM contacts:
- Contact 27 (wire N691-OR).
- Contact 35 (wire N958-PK).
- Contact 27 (wire N691-OR).
Expected Result:
All resistance is high.
Results:
- OK - All the resistance is high. The ECM may have failed. However, ECM failure is unlikely.
Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Contact your Cat dealer before replacing an ECM. If ECM replacement is necessary, see the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" Section of this manual.
STOP
- NOT OK - A resistance is low.
Repair: Repair or replace the harness.
