Cat® data-link

Note: MID 161 is generated by one ECM, this ECM is referred to as the following in various venues:

  • Communication Gateway 1 ECM

  • VIMS Main Module, in Caterpillar® Electronic Technician Cat® (ET)

  • VIMS 3G Main ECM, in this publication

This diagnostic code is recorded when the VIMS 3G Main ECM does not receive expected Implement ECM information at the correct update rate. The information is communicated through the Cat® data-link.

System Response:

This failure results in events that are logged against the Implement ECM that cannot be explained. The VIMS 3G Main ECM cannot communicate with the Implement ECM or the Implement ECM appears to communicate intermittently.

Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS

  1. Verify that the following information is correct:

    • VIMS 3G Main ECM onboard software part number

    • Implement ECM flash software part number

    • VIMS 3G Main ECM part number

    • Implement ECM part number

Note: Consult the business unit that produces the product for the correct configuration software part numbers.

Expected Result:

All part numbers are correct.

Results:

  • OK - All part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NOT OK - The VIMS 3G Main ECM or the Implement ECM has the wrong part number or the incorrect configuration software is installed.

Repair: Replace the component that has an incorrect part number.See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". Flash the correct configuration software. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".

    STOP

Test Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESS AND CONNECTORS

  1. Turn off the disconnect switch.

  1. Inspect the Cat data-link portion of the harness for the following:

    • Connections are clean and tight

    • Connectors mate properly

    • Seals are in place

    • Signs of damage

    • Wires are tight in the connector

Note: Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.

  1. Check the connectors for the following:

    • Moisture

    • Dirty contacts

    • Corroded contacts

    • Proper pin installation

    • Proper mating

Expected Result:

The harness and connectors pass inspection.

Results:

  • OK - The harness and connectors pass inspection. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NOT OK - The harness or connectors do not pass inspection.

Repair: Repair or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK FOR SHORTS TO GROUND

The disconnect switch remains off.

  1. Disconnect all ECMs from the Cat data-link.

  1. At the VIMS 3G Main ECM harness, measure the resistance between frame ground and connector contacts 8 (wire 893-GN) and 9 (wire 892-BR) of the Cat data-link circuit.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short between frame ground and the Cat data-link circuit.

Repair: Repair or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK FOR SHORT TO +BATTERY

The disconnect switch remains off and all related ECMs remain disconnected.

  1. At the Implement ECM harness connector, perform the following checks:

    • Measure the resistance between the +Battery connector contact J1-31 (wire 121-RD) and connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN).

    • Measure the resistance between connector contact J1-31 (wire 121-RD) and connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR).

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 5.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short between the +battery and the Cat data-link circuit.

Repair: Repair or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK FOR OPEN HARNESS

The disconnect switch remains off and all related ECMs remain disconnected.

  1. Check the continuity of the Cat data-link circuit in the harness:

    • Measure the resistance between VIMS 3G Main ECM connector contact 8 (wire 893-GN) and Implement ECM connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN).

    • Measure the resistance between VIMS 3G Main ECM connector contact 9 (wire 892-BR) and Implement ECM connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR).

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 5 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 6.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. The Cat data-link circuit is open.

Repair: Repair or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 6. CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES FOR OTHER ECM

  1. Reconnect all ECMs that use Cat data-link.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the keyswitch on.

  1. Check the event list for diagnostic codes that are logged against other ECMs.

Expected Result:

Diagnostic codes are not present for other ECMs.

Results:

  • OK - Diagnostic codes are not present for other ECMs. The Implement ECM may have failed, however, ECM failure is unlikely.

Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Contact your Cat dealer before replacing an ECM. If ECM replacement is necessary, see the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" Section of this manual.

    STOP

  • NOT OK - Diagnostic codes are present for other ECMs.

Repair: Perform the troubleshooting procedure for the other diagnostic codes.

    STOP
