- Remove the recoil spring and the track adjuster. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual , "Recoil Spring and Track Adjuster - Remove".
Personal injury or death can result from a compressed recoil spring being released suddenly using incorrect disassembly procedures. A recoil spring that is still held in compression can result in the recoil spring being released unexpectedly with extreme force which could cause serious injury or death. Make sure that the correct disassembly procedure is used, if a front track roller frame that has a crack in the parent metal or weld connection (or a tubular section that has separated from the front of the frame assembly) when the recoil spring is still held in compression. Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8273 which contains the disassembly procedure that must be used to decrease the possibility of injury while performing service on the track roller frame. |
- Prior to disassembling and assembling the recoil spring assembly, make sure that Tooling (A) is on a level surface.
- Thoroughly clean the outside surface of the recoil spring assembly prior to disassembly.

- Position two supports (1) of Tooling (A) in order to support the recoil spring assembly. Make sure that the two supports are level.
- Adjust the spacing between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3). The spacing is approximately the same length as the recoil spring assembly at free length.
Note: Do not remove the lifting device from the recoil spring assembly until the unit is leveled, centered, and locked in Tooling (A).
Note: The recoil spring assembly may be installed in Tooling (A) from the end. In this case, reaction plate (2) must be removed. Then reinstall reaction plate (2) after the recoil spring assembly is in place on two adjustable supports (1).
- The weight of the recoil spring assembly is approximately
185 kg (410 lb) . Fasten a suitable lifting device to the recoil spring assembly. Put the recoil spring assembly in position on two adjustable supports (1) in Tooling (A). Adjust two adjustable supports (1) until the centerline of the recoil spring assembly and the centerline of Tooling (A) are aligned.Show/hide tableIllustration 4 g00370415 The lifting device is removed from the recoil spring assembly for photographic purposes. - Put a level gauge (4) on the recoil spring assembly. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the recoil spring assembly is level. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the retaining rod and the nut are centered in the hole in reaction plate (2). After the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered, install two pins (5) on the back side of reaction plate (2), as shown. Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3). Make sure that the recoil spring assembly is level and centered.

Recoil spring force, if not relieved, can result in personal injury or death.
Relieve spring force before removing threaded retainer, performing repairs on recoil spring housing, or removing recoil spring.
- Remove bolts (15) and strip (14) from nut (7). Use Tooling (D) to remove nut (7) from the end of bolt (8).
Note: Slowly release the pressure on Tooling (B) in order to allow spring (12) to relax.
- Open the covers on Tooling (A). Fasten a suitable lifting device to the disassembled recoil spring assembly. Remove the reaction plate in order to remove the recoil spring assembly from Tooling (A).
- Separate bolt (8), cylinder (9), plate (11), tube (10), spring (12), and pilot (13).
