Calibrations (Operator Monitor)

Usage:

993K Z9K
The calibration of a component in the Power Train ECM allows the ECM to determine the correct output level. The calibration also allows the ECM to determine the correct input signal of displacement.

Some of the components that are connected to the Power Train ECM can be calibrated by using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET).

To access the calibration procedures for the Power Train ECM, use the operator monitor. Scroll to “Service” on the screen. Press the "OK" button.

Once the specific calibration is selected, the operator monitor will guide you through the calibration procedure.

The operator monitor will list initial machine conditions that must be satisfied before the ECM will allow the calibration procedure to continue. Follow the specific instructions on the display in order to successfully complete the calibration procedure.

Note: The “CALIBRATION REQUIRED” diagnostic will be active and the ECM will revert to the previous successful calibrated values if a calibration is aborted at any time. In order to clear the diagnostic, cycle the key.

The following list details the calibrations that can be performed for the components on the Power Train ECM.

Torque Converter Pedal

Illustration 5g01461389

This calibration adjusts the position sensor of the torque converter pedal. The sensor is calibrated by sensing the full depressed position and by using the full released position of the pedal.

The calibration may fail for the following reasons:

  • The value in the full depressed position is outside the working range for the sensor. The cause is usually an improperly adjusted sensor, a failed harness, or a failed sensor.

  • The value in the full released position is outside the working range of the sensor. The cause is usually an improperly adjusted sensor, a failed harness, or a failed sensor.

  • The difference between the full depressed pedal position and the full released pedal position is larger than the expected range. The cause is usually an improper adjustment of a sensor or an improper linkage adjustment.

  • The difference between the full depressed position and the full released position is too small in order to provide proper modulation. This may also indicate that the pedal was not fully depressed during the calibration.

Impeller Clutch Solenoid

Illustration 6g01461390

This calibration improves the quality of shifting for the machine. The calibration also sets the settings for rimpull.

Lockup Clutch

Illustration 7g01461407

This calibration sets the pressure for the lockup clutch. The current to the solenoid is manually adjusted. The current is adjusted in order to obtain the correct pressure in the clutch during the calibration. A separate gauge must be connected to the lockup clutch in order to monitor the adjustment of the pressure. The correct pressure in the clutch is 2030 kPa (295 psi).

A calibration must be performed after any of the following:

  • The clutch solenoid valve has been replaced or cleaned.

  • A new Power Train ECM has been installed.

  • The lockup clutch has been rebuilt.

  • The torque converter has been rebuilt.

Note: Engage the lockup clutch twelve times before initiating the calibration if a new solenoid has been installed. Allow the clutch to engage from four to six seconds during each engagement in order for the clutch to become fully pressurized.
