Installation Instructions for the 301-6928 Secondary Steering Ar (Kit){4300, 4304, 4324, 4334, 5927}

Introduction

This publication contains the information for installation of the kit for the secondary steering group. A complete listing of the parts that are contained in this kit are listed in the Parts Manual, SEBC1464. This supplemental product support literature should be used with the appropriate Service Manual and the appropriate Parts Manual that is available for this standard machine.

Do not perform any procedure and do not order parts that are outlined in this publication until you understand the information that is contained in this document.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal of any component, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Installation of the Secondary Steering Pump and Mounting Group

  1. Refer to Illustration 1 for the mounting location. Use the following hardware and install the 265-0857 Bracket As (1) onto the rear frame:

  1. Refer to Illustration 1 for the mounting location. Use the following hardware and install the 313-5855 Secondary Steering Pump and Electric Motor Gp (2) onto the 265-0857 Bracket As (1) :

    (A) Hose

  1. Remove hose (A) from the steering lines group.

  1. Install the 225-0311 Tee As (10) into the pressure port of the secondary steering pump.

  1. Install the 194-2903 Elbow As (9) into the bottom of the 225-0311 Tee As (10) .

  1. Install the 269-4952 Adapter (11) into the 194-2903 Elbow As (9) .

  1. Connect the straight end of the 282-6736 Hose As (16) into the top of the 225-0311 Tee As (10) .

  1. Install a 304-8017 Fitting As (17) onto the check valve (D) .

  1. Install the 9T-1013 Check Valve As (Secondary Steering) (6) onto the 304-8017 Fitting As (17) .

  1. Connect the ninety degree end of 282-6734 Hose As (14) onto the 304-8017 Fitting As (17) .

  1. Connect the other end of the 282-6734 Hose As (14) onto the steering control group.

  1. Install a 269-4967 Adapter Elbow (13) into each of the other two ports on the secondary steering pump.

  1. Connect one end of the 317-4330 Hose As (18) onto the 269-4967 Adapter Elbow (13) that is on the right hand side of the secondary steering pump.

  1. Connect one end of the 282-6735 Hose As (15) onto the 269-4967 Adapter Elbow (13) that is on the left hand side of the secondary steering pump.

  1. Route the two hoses to the hydraulic tank.

  1. Remove plugs (B) and (C). Replace plugs (B) and (C) with a 269-4962 Adapter Elbow (12) .

  1. Connect the other end of the 282-6735 Hose As (15) onto the 269-4962 Adapter Elbow (12) that is mounted on the bottom of the hydraulic tank.

  1. Connect the other end of the 317-4330 Hose As (18) onto the 269-4962 Adapter Elbow (12) that is mounted on the front of the hydraulic tank.

  1. Use the following hardware and secure the two hoses:

  1. Connect one end of the 307-3093 Cable As (6) onto the secondary steering pump. Tighten the nut to 21 ± 1 N·m (15.49 ± 0.74 lb ft).

  1. Use the following hardware and connect the other end of the 307-3093 Cable As (6) onto a ground stud on the rear frame:

  1. Slip a 194-4046 Terminal Cover (2) over the ninety degree end of the 307-3095 Cable As (7). Connect the ninety degree end of the 307-3095 Cable As (7) onto the relay that is for the secondary steering pump. Tighten the nut to 8 ± 1 N·m (5.90 ± 0.74 lb ft). Push the 194-4046 Terminal Cover (2) in place over the terminal. Secure the 194-4046 Terminal Cover (2) with a 3S-2093 Cable Strap (15) .

  1. Route the 307-3095 Cable As (7) upward to the junction block that is for the battery. Connect the other end of the 307-3095 Cable As (7) onto the junction block that is for the battery.

  1. Use the following hardware and secure the 307-3095 Cable As (7) to the rear frame:

  1. Use two 3K-0360 O-Ring Seal (14) and install the two 313-5104 Pressure Switches (Secondary Steering Oil) (13). Tighten the two 313-5104 Pressure Switches (Secondary Steering Oil) (13) to 75 ± 7 N·m (55.32 ± 5.16 lb ft).

  1. Install a 218-4935 Arc Suppressor (3) onto the end of the 307-3087 Steering Harness As (5).

  1. Connect the end of the 307-3087 Steering Harness As (5) onto the chassis harness.

  1. Use the following hardware in order to secure the 218-4935 Arc Suppressor (3) .

  1. Use the following hardware in order to secure the 307-3087 Harness As (5) onto the frame:

Install the Relay for the Secondary Steering

  1. Install the 248-2841 Relay As (10) in the fuse block.
