Transmission Control - Shift Pad

Usage:

TH31-E61 LAD

Illustration 1g01248178

Note: The shifter communicates with the engine and the transmission via the CAN Data Link. The shifting ability of the transmission is limited when the communication between the engine and the transmission is disrupted. If the transmission is not able to shift above the first forward gear for a TH31 or the second forward gear for a TH35, check all of the J1939 connections for proper mating.

Well Service Work-over Rig Operation

The ECU will use the position of the selector switch to determine the "active" shifter and will ignore the other shifter. The ECU will also run a different shift schedule based on the active shifter. The shifter in the cab must be configured by the wiring of the location code in order to be the primary shifter. For the shifter in the cab, the ECU will automatically shift the transmission up and down based on output speed. The shifter on the deck must be configured by location code wiring to be the secondary shifter. For the shifter on the deck, the ECU will function in a power shift mode, shifting into whatever gear is selected. The ECU will not shift into reverse when using the deck shifter. The shifter will display two alpha-numeric codes. The display on the left is desired gear and the display on the right is actual gear. Both shifters will display the information for the shifter that is active. For example, if the vehicle is in Road Mode, the deck shifter will display the information about the cab shifter.

In order to properly switch between Road Mode and Deck Mode, both shifters must be in neutral, the toggling the selector switch will signal the ECU to switch from one shifter to the other.

Basic Shifting

The transmission control will operate like an automatic transmission when the cab (primary) shifter is active. The operator can select D (Drive) on the shifter and the transmission will automatically shift up and down based on output speed. When the draw works (secondary) shifter is active, the transmission will operate like a manual shift transmission responding to the upshift and downshift buttons by shifting into whatever gear is selected but will only shift if engine speed is less than 800 rpm. The transmission control will ignore the R (Reverse) on the draw works shifter.

Shift Inhibits

Cold mode - when transmission sump temperature is below 15 °C (59 °F), the transmission will not upshift above the lowest gear.

Pump Operation

If the optional second shifter is used, the ECU will use the state of the selector switch to determine which shifter is "active" and will ignore the other shifter. The ECU will run the same shift schedule for both shifters, a power-shift mode, shifting into whatever gear is selected. The ECU will not shift into reverse. The shifter will display two alpha-numeric codes. The display on the left is desired gear and the display on the right is actual gear. If the optional second shifter is used, both shifters will display the information for the shifter that is active.

In order to properly switch from on shifter to the other, both shifters must be in NEUTRAL, the toggling the selector switch will signal the ECU to switch from one shifter to the other. This selector switch is not required for single shifter pump applications and the single keypad shifter should be wired as the primary shifter.

Basic Shifting

The transmission will operate like a power shift transmission responding to the upshift and downshift buttons by shifting into whatever gear is selected. R (REVERSE) is treated like a park position, if the operator selects R, the control engage a combination of clutches that will lock the output shaft.

Shift Inhibits

Cold mode - when transmission sump temperature is below 15 °C (59 °F), the transmission will not upshift above the lowest gear.
