When the load on the auxiliary drive is near to the upper limit of the load factor, the load is transfered to the idler gear. Excess loading on the teeth of the idler gear and on the thrust surfaces can occur. The excess loading can accelerate wear of the bushing.
There are two solutions to this issue. Auxiliary drive load may be close to the upper load factor, and the load on the auxiliary cycle to a high load factor. The second solution may then be required.
First Solution
Install a thicker thrust plate 255-1209 and three longer bolts 6i-0650 to the idler gear.
Second Solution
Install the assembly of the heavy-duty idler gear. The heavy-duty idler gear has a needle bearing and a larger hub. The larger hub diameter will require the front housing cover to be replaced. The cover for the heavy-duty idler gear has a larger bore.
Consult your Caterpillar Dealer or the engineering for your application in order to determine if the application is suitable for the installation of the heavy-duty idler gear.
