Switches
Switches provide information to the ECM (17). Switches are two state devices. The switches are either open or the switches are closed.
Closed - The switch closes the circuit to ground or the switch closes the circuit to the battery.
Open - the switch opens a circuit to the ECM input.
Key Start Switch
Illustration 2 | g00927534 |
When the key start switch (23) is in the ON position, electrical power from the batteries is supplied to the electronic control modules.
When the key start switch is in the START position and the conditions for starting the engine are satisfied, the start relay is energized.
Downshift Switch
Illustration 3 | g00726587 |
The downshift switch (11) tells the ECM (17) that the operator wants the transmission to downshift one gear. The downshift switch has one input connection to the ECM.
Autoshift Switch
Illustration 4 | g00726604 |
The autoshift switch (9) tells the ECM the mode that is selected by the operator. The autoshift switch has one input connection to the ECM. When the operator selects the AUTO mode, the ECM will select the proper transmission gear. The proper transmission gear is based upon the speed of the transmission. The machine must be in neutral in order to activate the AUTO mode. When the operator selects the MANUAL mode, the transmission gear selection is made by the operator. The operator uses the transmission direction and speed control lever to select the transmission gear. When the operator selects the ECONOMY mode, the ECM will select the transmission gear but the transmission will shift at lower transmission speeds.
The machine ECM (17) will use the following inputs in order to engage the proper clutches:
- Transmission direction and speed control lever (1)
- Intermediate speed sensors (2) and (3)
- Output speed sensors (4) and (5)
- Torque converter output speed sensor (7)
- Three-position Switch for the Transmission neutralizer (8)
- Autoshift switch (9)
- Downshift switch (11)
- Transmission direction control switch (16)
- Brake pressure sensor (14)
- Accumulator pressure sensor (13)
- Parking brake switch (10)
- Engine ECM (21)
The machine ECM (17) uses input from the service connector via the CAT data link (18). The machine ECM (17) also uses input from the engine ECM (21) via the CAN data link.
Transmission Direction and Speed Control Lever
Illustration 5 | g00887024 |
Direction switches
In normal operation, the switches for the transmission direction and speed control lever (1) close the direction inputs on the ECM to ground. The closed switches tell the ECM the direction that is selected by the operator. The ECM then activates the appropriate directional solenoid.
Note: Because two input lines are used for each direction, the ECM can diagnose problems with the circuits for the direction lever. A solenoid for direction is not activated and the transmission remains in neutral if the following actions occur:
- The direction lever does not ground either of the forward inputs or reverse inputs of the ECM.
- The direction lever grounds both the reverse input and the forward input at the same time.
Speed switches
In normal operation, the switches for the speed close the speed inputs on the ECM to ground. The closed switches tell the ECM the speed that is selected by the operator. The ECM then activates the appropriate solenoid for the speed that is selected.
Three-position Switch for the Programmable Transmission Neutralizer
Illustration 6 | g00726604 |
The transmission neutralizer function puts the transmission in neutral when the brake pressure reaches the pressure setting. The transmission is held in neutral until the brake is released. The transmission neutralizer switch (8) is used to disable the transmission neutralizer function. The same switch is used in order to change the brake pressure of the transmission neutralizer function. The light on the transmission neutralizer switch is illuminated when the feature is disabled.
Ride Control Switch
Illustration 7 | g00726666 |
The ride control switch (12) signals the mode that is selected by the operator to the ECM. The operator may select the AUTO mode, the ON mode or the OFF mode.
Note: A double-pole single-throw switch is used for diagnostic purposes. If the two poles are ever tied to + battery voltage, the control knows that a circuit failure is present. This fault is then shown on the diagnostic indicator.
Load Check Switch
Illustration 8 | g00726667 |
The load check switch signals to the ECM to activate the load check relay. If the engine is dead or there is no hydraulic pressure, the implements can be lowered by activating the load check switch.
If the machine is equipped with a load check switch, the load check switch is a position on the ride control switch (12) .
Parking Brake Switch
Illustration 9 | g00726668 |
The parking brake switch (10) is used in order to signal the status of the parking brake to the ECM. If the parking brake is applied and the machine is in gear, the machine remains in neutral. If the machine is shifted into gear and the parking brake is applied, the machine will stay in neutral.
When the parking brake is applied and the machine speed is above a preset speed, the transmission will automatically downshift in order to slow the machine.
Sensors

Speed Sensors
Illustration 11 | g00909584 |
The transmission is equipped with the following speed sensors:
- Torque converter output speed sensor (7)
- Intermediate speed sensor (2)
- Intermediate speed sensor (3)
- Output speed sensor (4)
- Output speed sensor (5)
All of the speed sensors are located on the right side of the transmission case. As the gear teeth pass the end of each sensor, an AC voltage is produced. The frequency of the voltage is proportional to the speed of the gear teeth. The ECM uses these signals to make decisions.
Temperature Sensors
Illustration 12 | g00909585 |
The transmission oil temperature sensor (6) monitors the temperature of the transmission oil. The transmission oil temperature sensor is mounted below the transmission relief valve.
The torque converter temperature sensor (13) monitors the temperature of the torque converter oil. The torque converter temperature sensor is mounted on top of the transmission on the torque converter housing.
Brake Pressure Sensor For The Neutralizer
Illustration 13 | g00913275 |
The neutralizer function consists of a brake pressure sensor (14) that is mounted on the brake valve. When the brakes are applied, the pressure sensor sends a signal to the machine ECM (17). The machine ECM will neutralize the transmission at the proper brake pressure. The machine ECM will engage the transmission when the brakes are released.
Other Inputs
The machine ECM also receives information from the service connector (19) via the CAT data link (18), the engine ECM (21) via the CAN data link, and the dash panel cluster (22) .
